Just noticed the Posts count under each poster - obviously takes a lot of posts to get past 0 Tongue out

Are you planning to have titles Adam - maybe we could adopt #1's list of aboriginal fish names Laughing

Fri, 2008-10-31 10:49

Your too quick Col, can't do anything subtley around here.

Can only make them general unfortunately:

Thinking:

0-50 posts = Live Bait

51-100 posts = Fingerling

101-250 posts =

251-500 posts =

501-1000 posts =

1001 ++ posts =

Any suggestions, feel free to make them, just get them in quick as were doing them now.

The actual posts won't be displayed under your avatar because we don't want to discourage new members from joining/starting to post.

Fair go TL

Fri, 2008-10-31 12:17

Some of my posts are probably regarded as mindless - well perhaps all of them, but if all posts were strictly limited to marine issues a lot of the zazz and interest would disappear from the site. Dreamweaver's excruciating puns - and helpful computer advice all form part of the reason the site is so popular.

@TL: The idea is to show names instead of Post counts. The argument is that Post counts may make newbies reluctant to join the conversation if they see the high post counts and see an established community. Also it's a bit of fun.

What do you think?

Comment spam would recieve delicious moderator smack down as always.

Good grief! Imagine if every change to this wonderful forum went through a public comentary phase Laughing

I can understand (perhaps) where the concern with post count comes from. I've seen (on other sites) (facile) arguements (or at least (falacious) stances) as to (perceived) credibility and accumen based on post count - even down to the selection of moderators.

BUT! This is where THIS site is different! There is a whole host of us that always makes a point of welcoming new members and never judge people or treat them as a NOOB because it's their first post.

People sitting on the side see this and it makes them feel comfortable.

But does it matter how many posts you have made or when you joined? New people looking in may feel pressured to keep up or feel like there not knowledgable enough to post.

In short; nope.

New people looking in may feel pressured to keep up or feel like there not knowledgable enough to post.

I don't think so on the point of 'keeping up'. I've always thought that people just post. It's an organic thing.

Just my thoughts!

...and THAT is the important bit!

There seems to be a difference between points and posts?

I don't personally think the "Date Joined" really needs to be on every post, perhaps even the  postcount. They don't add to the conversational flow in the messages.

Save the cpu cycles and leave that on the user info pages perhaps.

The post counts aren't actually meant to be there, but I do want to have the names there assigned for what post countage you have.  Just as a bit of fun.  The other thing I want there is where your from, or a location:

Ok, I'll move the date joined into the my account section instead of displayed in avatar.  The other thing I'm trying to get Sambo to do is put a line between the avatar and the comment box to seperate them a bit more, when his motherboard decides to fix itself that is.

Good suggestion Adam. It's nice to know where people hail from and a good opportunity for people to team up in the world outside of this forum.

As for number of posts etc I agree with Adam. It's good to know who is active here. I also agree that not all topics need to be absolutely fish related. I really enjoy some of the off-beat topics that come up. If we only talk about fish at the Xmas party I will be gone after the second beer. Some of you guys need to lighten up a bit.

Cheers, Vince
