Spinning for trolling?
Submitted by bream on on Thu, 2011-06-09 12:26
Hey guys, Just bought a lemax slim max and ajiking wahoo 8000 for jigging. Realistically I'll hardly be doing a lot of jigging, more bottom bouncing and hopefully trolling. I know a overhead reel is more idealistic for trolling and even bottom bouncing but could I still troll with an 8000 size spinning reel, or is it worth trying to swap for an overhead slim max and overhead reel just for a bit of piece of mind that I won't get spooled on my spinning gear Thanks!

So much wrong with trolling
So much wrong with trolling spinners, but we can't really answer your question. I mean I know how much I dislike trolling spinners, but I can't tell you how much it will annoy you!

it'll work
as till says it may annoy you, i prefer using a spinner for bottom bouncing(i might be unusual, but i have a rod i like to BB with thats spin) and like the overhead for trolling. I still used spinning reels when trolling this year for mackies and tuna as i wasnt gonna go and buy more overhead combos for purely trolling. I also use spinners for all my surf casting so maybe its more of what your used to, but its not too common to get spooled in a boat when you can chase a fish

go overhead

The overhead is a better choice and will be suitable for the periodical jigging also. Spinning reels can be used for trolling but the overhead reel, line capacity & drag curve makes it more suitable for trolling.

Trolling an overhead lever
Trolling an overhead lever drag, you need to let more line out, you just release the lever till the right amount of line comes out, then you move it back to strike. On a spinner, you have to flip the bail and back.
Trolling a spinner, you fiddle with the drag till you have it on lighter setting for strike, then when you geta fish, you have to tighten it to some sort of fight position. Thing is you never really know what its at when you have the fish on. On an overhead lever drag, you just use the strike and sunset drag positions.
Lots more too!

Funnily enough, when trolling
Funnily enough, when trolling gars for billies it's exactly the opposite. You want free spool with out the potential for overrun. Spin is perfect if you use a dubro clip and open bail arm. Drag is already set at strike.
I've used spin for trolling lures as well and didn't find them too bad. Just no loud ratchets.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?
