sounder problem
Submitted by ricey on Wed, 2011-01-05 15:38
i just bought a hummingbird sounder 596C and it is great when stopped to going just forwards but stops working when travelling over say 5- 8 knots, by not working i mean just reverts to 0.5 feet and does not show anything.
It could be a setup problem, though i have tried working that out. I am asking if my transducer is located in a good place, and if not where should i move it too please.

It doesn't really look like
It doesn't really look like its even protruding past the bottom of the hull, its also too close to the strake.

best place to have the
best place to have the transducer is in clear water and the front edge about 10mm below the hull with it slightly lower at the back like say 5 to 10mm.that one is definately in the wrong spot

with those tinnie hulls
with those tinnie hulls finding clean water is always an issue.
I'd move much closer to the centre, about 4 inch's out from the keel and have the bottom of the transducer about 15mm lower than the bottom of the hull. Also face it about 10deg forward to get a cleaner flow over it.
Another trick is to mount the tranducer on a strong piece of allie metal pole and move it around and up and down the transom, using a few G-clamps to secure, that way you can experiment on finding your sweat-spot.
good luck,
Tony

defiantly needs to be lower
defiantly needs to be lower in the water,
usally the center line of the tranny needs to be level with bottom of the hull, and as till said not near the strake.
fron the pic it looks like it need to be lowered 1-2inches and to the left a little.
you dont have any options of missing a strake so just make sure its inbetween two of them.
also from memory, the rear of the tranny shold be a fraction lower than the front.
hope that makes sense.
or what tony said

see if that works as can't seem to post image
and transducer shouldn't be too close to motor leg either
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Clocks chime but boats have
Clocks chime but boats have chines.
Its the transition between the bottom and the side so there are only two on a boat. Those things are planing strakes.
