Sounder help please

Hey guys,

Recently i have purchased a furuno 620 and have been testing it out mainly in shallow water. Yesterday i headed out to have a fish in some deeper water for the first time with this sounder, i have been out this far before but only with the old black and white job that came with the boat and never had much luck. All im trying to find out is what have i got on the photos i have uploaded? is this what structure looks like in the 40's?? i had a few drifts over these patches with not much to show except for a charlie court and some colourful looking reef fish. Any help would be much appreciated, Cheers

that is some structure with fish on it without a doubt. its a pity the fish didnt want to play. if you play around with the gain while out there you will get a better idea of what to look for. it took me a while to get used to the 585 and was still learning when i sold it. takes time but you will get there

Charlie Courts? Where are you, up north somewhere i'm guessing?

I'd be returning to that spot and either dragging some big baits or big Softies.

I can swap photos with you...

I've got photos just like that, along with what we had on our sounder (Furuno 620) on Friday up here at Jurien. The worst part is seeing the fish on the sounder and not getting anything to take a bait...I hope you marked that spot so you have another try....that's the frustrating part of fishing, having the technology only tells you what's down there, not that they will take your bait!!

Hang in there, from what I see, there's fish down there!!!

The first photo on the very right hand side is showing some ground but every thing else just looks like bait fish. The ground is shown on the bottom lock just to the right of the zero on your screen. You can see the red flare up a little. Definetely worth a drop. Fish won't always be on the bite so try it another day or even a few hours later.

Take your gain off auto and for 40m I would be setting it on 3-4. Once set leave it. You want to keep things consistent and after a while you will start to see whats worth fishing and whats not. Too high a gain can show a lot of stuff thats not fish. Also set the right hand screen to the last 20m-30m it will give you a better look at the bottom where the fish are. The sooner you start using manual settings the better off you will be.

Thanks for your feedback guys, this will help alot. These were taken from metro waters but I have caught Charlie courts up north and wat I got on Friday was identical. Even if it was edible it was undersize so went straight back. I'm hopefully gonna get out tomorrow if all goes to plan and try again, cheers again ;)

HAPPY EASTER!
