small graphite vs small fibreglass-glasstip rod

eh guys, i'm currently using a 7'6" graphite rod to flick small lures and sp around, however i also have a 7'6" fibreglass rod with glass tip that i was using when i started baitfishing for breams...

which one would achieve greater casting distance with 8lb braid and 40cm of 8lb fluoro? i'm mainly using sps and little minnows

as well which one would better allow to feel the bites?

a last question not relating to rods, any tips on how to avoid weed when using sp's and lures?

thanks in advance for your comments

cheers

Try them both out and see which one feels better

I can;t help you too much without knowing more about the specifics of each rod.

Can't help you too much with the weed either. I have had to put my SPs back the bag when bream fishing lately because of the weed.

Try em both

try them both as Colin said but my pick would be the graphite, lighter and more sensitive to bites. Nothing much you can do about the weed except hope it goes away

Usually graphite will cast

Usually graphite will cast further, but if the tip is quite whippy, then perhaps it might chuck a small lure further (as the lure doesnt have a lot of weight to impart rod bending for the cast). Graphite will almost certainly be more sensitive and easier to work the lures/plastics with finesse action. Depends on the specifics of each rod though.

As for weedless, try texas rigging them with g-locks or similar (e.g. twist locks)

Hi Ya, Until early 2008 had

Fri, 2009-01-30 13:14

Hi Ya,

Until early 2008 had only fished with solid tip rods.  While in Kalbarri October, used my brothers graphite and the difference was astounding.  Both rods were 2 - 4 kg, mine with 6lb crystal fireline my bros 3lb braid of some sort.

For me now, graphite all the way.  That is not to say that the solid tip does not have it's place, I simply haven't found it yet.Smile

I suppose the real difference is that with a solid tip, you move your (rod holding) hand in an arch of 45 degrees, your rod tip does not move anywhere near that far because of the 'bend' in the tip so your lure doesn't move far at all.  However, with a graphite, move your hand in a 45 degree arch, the tip of the rod will move a much greater distance because of the lack of 'bend' in the rod, and your lure moves much further.  The down side is that you have to learn how to use lures all over again because if you aren't careful, each twitch of you hand will move your lure several feet rather than the few inches required.  And that will result in much fewer fish.
And I'm still learning. Cry

Cheers.

A graphite rod will cast

Fri, 2009-01-30 16:24

A graphite rod will cast further than the equivalent fibreglass rod due to the ability of graphite to respond back with a counter load everytime you cast. At the end of your cast, the fibreglass rod hasnt got much memory, therefore it'll wobble its ass away restricting line flowing thru the guides. To get a further cast, the line has to straightened out quicker, so it'll flow thru quicker hence further cast. A graphite rod has memory and less recoil. So the quicker the rod can straighten out the faster the line can travel thru the guides thus giving you a further cast.
