How I get on!

Sat, 2010-11-20 11:11

Well if I dont get eaten they work If I do they dont!!!

But it seemed like a good price...my mate asked at the local dive store and they were still selling them for $760.00 delivery in 5 to 10 days. I didn't want to buy one but I have lost the confidence to dive without one now after 16 years I didn't think that would happen.

I heard that different

I heard that different shields have different radius of protection. Is this right? If so, what's the distance on this model?

No

It has about 6m radius but this decreases in very cold water and if you have the antennae coiled up it reduces also as you need to have a certain distance between the electrodes (there's one each end of the antennae)

Actually might need to get one of these, bloody wobbegong has moved into one of my favourite cray caves and its either the shark shield or some cold steel.

Well Actualy

cold steel may be the answer as the wobbly gongs, carpets and port Jacksons dont have the ampullae of lorezini on the snout so they dont work with those sharks!

they might not have many

they might not have many Ampullae on the snout (although they do have some), but those species have heaps of Ampullae under the snout.  Shark Shield manufacturer claims the device doesn't work as well on benthic feeders such as those, but I've seen a wobbie turn itself inside out trying to get out of a cave when the shield was switched on.

from the Shark Shield website

Just checked the FAQ from their website.

Also note the last sentence - you have nothing to worry about wobbiesSurprisedlol

25. What types of sharks does the Shark Shield deter?

All predatory shark species are repelled by the Shark Shield. These include Great Whites, Tigers, Zambezi (Bull), Mako, Oceanic, Grey Nurse, Hammerhead sharks.

Some sharks, in particular the bottom feeders, including Woobygong, Carpet and Port Jackson sharks, have their Ampullae of Lorenzini located under their snouts and as such have a diminished response to the Shark Shield wave form. A small number of sharks such as the Seven Gill shark have a diminished Ampullae so are less affected. The sharks that fall into these categories are in general, not considered dangerous to humans.

The brochure that came with the unit states those sharks DONT have them and are NOT affected.

They dont work on Wobbies .......they dont have the same reseptors in the nose as

other sharks.

I know first hand , layed down with a XXX large model in a hole chasing crays and he

didn't even wake up .....luckily for me !

What spooked you. I am a Master Diver from years ago and got spooked after a GW chased me on a speed board windsurfer I was testing off leighton's. Didnt have the guts to get in the water, but shields didnt exist then either.

Just recent events

Wed, 2010-11-24 16:01

The last couple of years I only dived about Half dozen times due to different circumstances like family work etc but it just seems they are getting a bit too frequent (the sitings and attacks)I think as I get older I realise I'm not invincible anymore and the fact I have 4 with one more on the way grand kids I just lost the Bottle! It anoys me as I love diving but you cant help how you feel, I live near rockingham and it seems the place at the moment for biteys!

I hear you

Up here in Dampier there is probably much less risk but I can still see the teeth on the GW trying to eat the end of the board and it still sh*ts me that I have this phobia. On the other hand dont have any problems pulling a shark onboard, dehooking it, or even using the long hook remover (about 12inches) to try and retrieve hooks out of bigger biteys. When on Marina firma or terra firma they dont bother me at all. Just getting in their domain.

PS Marina firma is a nickname I have for a stable boat.
