sambo season

i spose when the sambos are running then it doesn't really matter who you go with...mills, blue juice or shikari!
but for the quality of the gear n experience shikari would be the way to go...but as andrew said book quite away in advance

cheers

I don't know exactly but it's VERY full so ring soon , $200 a shot bring lunch and drinks ( softies and water are usually on board) it is very strenuous, 80 lb with locked up drags ( around 10 to 25 kilo drags)   .

I wouldn't go if your under 15/16 it's a long day out there and the weather turns to crap most arvo's .

Blue Juice only cause I reckon it's a bit faster and more roomy on board. They get onto some good fish too. Cost last I went was $160.00 with a minimum of 12 people I think. Shikari is OK but a bit more uncomfortable when it gets a bit rougher. The boat rocks alot when drifting which is when your locked onto that big puppy. Your choice mate...........Feel the force.........

blue juice

Tue, 2007-07-31 18:03

you have to pay for lost jigs on blue juice don't you? not sure if it's true...pretty sure i heard it some where!
to be honest...i went out on mills charters sambo jigging last season and i thought they were prettty good...breaky n lunch n snacks and drinks. the spheros/tcurve 400 combos which do the job..and your on their massive boat (not sure of length) but its stable

cheers

Shikari!

Tue, 2007-07-31 18:31

I've found Shikari to be the best IMO. The extra cost is bugger all when you compare what your getting ie experience/knowledge and the fish handling is second to none......Shikari Charters for me!

IMO

Tue, 2007-07-31 18:57

As a diverse fisherman i like to do all types. Jigging sambo's for me is fun but i'm also getting big skippy, big red snapper etc so the days broken up and I can bottom fish on the way out or in....like Shikari does (i think) if people request it.

Admitingly i cant do it all the time so periodical trips are it for me.Most dedicated bottom fisherman hate sambo's and when i'm targetting bottom eating species they can bug me too. For many they're a sportfish with a big following and they can do it all the time......long arms hehehe

Sambo's are good fun but.....

Tue, 2007-07-31 19:12

You can't hide the disappointment after calling it for a massive dhuie, then a stingray, then a shovel nose shark, then a KG, then a flounder etc etc. hey Shag.

Personally I don't mind them every now and then to give the tackle a work out, but tend to agree that its generally time to move on. But given I only do about 4 drifts per spot it doesn't make a lot of difference to me if we catch one here and there.

PS: The "Dropzone" wouldn't be a dropzone without a few Sambo's messing with our minds.

Cheers

yeh!

I get bottom fish on jigs no probs and enjoy the challenge but you need to work at it a lot. I'd say bait is still more productive but again i break it up. Each to their own but bottom smashin all the time loses it's shine for me but drift baiting has changed that some what. I do it for fun and the fillets are a bonus when i decide to keep a few fish...........diversity is what keeps me going!

Yeh Andy i've got a spot that's loaded with dhu's but the sambo's love the spot too......only medium ones but as they're taking my bait off the bottom you do a bit of guessing initially!

I just love the banter that always follows a decent hook up on my boat, guessing what the heck it is on the end of the line. I think the reason why I love fishing so much, is apart from the fun of pulling something in on a rod and reel, its the fun you have with your mates while you are doing it that makes for a great day, fish or no fish.

Getting back on topic, I think you will find the best charter will be the one you get along with the fellow fisho's the best. I doubt you can argue that all the boats mentioned earlier will get you onto the fish when they are in season, the difference will be the quality of the crew and the amount of fun you have doing it. Good luck Luke, tell us who you ended up going with and make sure you take heaps of pics.

If you go on Shikari, make sure you take a pic of Mav working hard doing his baby sitting, otherwise we won't believe it.

Cheers

I agree Matt and when i was working on Mills years ago i would avoid whole baits and stuck with skinned ocky to get all the tasty fish and avoid the hippo's. I'll be drift baiting on Friday if the wind stays the same!

Sambos

Tue, 2007-07-31 20:03

Each to there own but there is nothing like hooking a 100lb sambo and watching him peel 50lb braid off the reel. Still dont mind a feed of snapper and dhu but these days im in for the sport, not the feed. There is allways the chance of good bottom fish when on the sambos it just depends on what you target. Theres always the chance to get a feed on the way out or back in.

Only advice is to check the number of people and size of the boat you head out on. I have seen on several occasions charter boats fishing 15-20 people off one side of the boat so you can imagine the results when they all hook up. Not fun.

Im with you bouttime! Love the sport and love the feed. When im hunting for a feed i dont want sambos but just got to love the old jiggy jig to get the heart racing............we perth guys havent got tooooooooo much variety in the sport fish seen so sambos keep us busy until we head north. You cant just pull out of a marina in perth and chuck the lures out the back for some action very time there hit the water like some other spots but pull up to a big box on the ocean floor and get nailed on every drop! Just close your eyes when you see it and say "what a mackie" lol.

Keep it tight, reeeeeeel tight!

Caught 1

Wed, 2007-08-01 18:11

Caught 1 Sambo and thats enough for me to say I can now tick it off my species list. Also ate it to try it once to make a informed decision of my own and yeah personally think its shite.

I prefer catching salmon and tuna if its for the sack of sport but even that isnt as fun as pulling up a good Dhu or Snapper. Each to their own hey.

"Ryan I only fish the bottom

Wed, 2007-08-01 18:43

"Ryan I only fish the bottom and I'm quite one dimentional as trolling down here bores me!

I believe that a quality table(bottom) fish will alway take a bait over a jig/lure!IMO!!!

Whether this is true or not we will never know!

One thing is for sure, F@CK sambo's unless you enjoy the taste or your cat likes them!

I would prefer to get smacked by sharks!"

I find myself doing less and less bottom fishing lately as I get more into jigging. I fish side by side with someone and I just about always catch just as much if not more fish on jigs.

Once I caught my first decent fish on a jig I found it hard use bait again. Bait fishing just doesn't do it for me anymore, it's incredibly boring when compared with jigging. Like already mentioned it's not just for pelagics, bottom fish willingly take jigs too!

Some love it

Thu, 2007-08-02 15:48

Well all I can say is there are a lot of people out there that love it , some weekends there are over 40 boats out there and there not chasin' demersals .

I wouldn't bag anybody for doing any type of fishing , I myself wouldn't bother catchin' trout in a little steam down south but some do nothing but it , each to their own , I have just started fly fishing , didn't ever think I would but here I am down the park practicing .

Recon I'll be burleying up some herring this weekend to see if I can get one on fly .

diverse!

Thu, 2007-08-02 16:01

I do very well on catching bottom fish on jigs and do think that north is easier for sure. As mentioned I get bottom fish on jigs "but" i dedicate a day just to jigs......no bait at all. On these days i get a massive buzz putting fish in the ice box with myself "fooling' the fish to hit an artificial jig. I prefer the smaller baitfish profiles and get most bottom fish on jigs but the baldy's a hard bastard!

I mix it up, i jig, i bottom smash, i drift bait......diverse!

Jigging

Mon, 2007-08-06 23:14

Love putting newbies onto the sambos and watching them try not to get pulled over the side.

Personally I love all types of fishing with artificials, I had just as much fun with poppers and stickbaits catching and releasing salmon around Perth in April.

Meat fishing doesn't interest me whats so ever and a look inside my shed/tackle boxes will confirm this.

Just picked up a 50lb popper stick (700L) which I'm looking forward to putting some serious bends in a bit later this year.
