RIP TLD 50

headed out of west side of exxy on sat for a troll for some billies, i took my mates boat because its a little bigger and easyer for me to fish in. i set my tld 50 and tyronos 30 up with skirts and headed out towards the 100m mark. make note i have never trolled with these rods without using straps, but i had left both of them in my tinny. it was a slow start until a very nice sive billly came into the spread cheaking out my ballyho in close behind the boat. then he turn sharply and belted the skirt out back on my tld50, but before i new it the rod holder had exploded and the tld flew out the back of the boat and skipped along the water. It was a very sad day for me, the reel wasnt that old and i had just bought the 24kg backbone rod 4 days early that also flew out ther boat. i learnt two lessons, never troll expensive outfits without straps, and never use plastic shitty rod holders. more annoying part was i lost the biggest billy i have seen so far.

Bad Luck

Well certainly shows the importance of starps, and more so of the shitty plastic rod holders failing.

Personally i would never use the plastic ones for trolling especially game fishing, they break way to easily for my liking, only heavy duty stainless ones for me.

what size do you estimate the billy?

Sorry Chrisp, but I just had a good laugh visualing the look on your face as it happened.

Just my warped sense of humour, but one day you'll look back and laugh.

RIP the TLD50.

John

To see a good rod and reel combo flying out to sea attached to a big fish is the stuff of nightmares.

Just not while in use unfortunately. That would suck to see the rod holder bust and your reel skipping away! May the fishing gods smile upon you!

Actually if you have a good look at your boat insurance, often that covers some boat contents as well.

I feel your pain on the reel though, I lost one outfit and now always worry about it!

Till's right

It is important to note all accessories on your boat's insurance policy and include it in the sum insured. Will cost hardly anything extra. Then your rods, tackle, epirb, PFD's, Plotter, Sounder etc are insure'd for theft while on the boat and damage whilst not in use. Read your policies wording to find out if it covers things like dropping gear over the edge.

Mate, I feel your pain.

Was out with the mrs and kids and got onto a few squid at the back of one of the islands. Decided I'd lean over and wash my hands and the wedding ring slipped off the finger and into 20 mtrs of water. Needless to say my name was MUD for awhile.

Insurance did cover it though, so not as bad as it coulda been I guess'

Cheers

Lucky it wasn't a Tiagra.

Mon, 2009-06-22 19:12

Lucky it wasn't a Tiagra. But still hurts all the same. Never ever ever use plastic rod holders. Stainless all the way. Never lost a rod but lost my wedding ring at Lucky Bay 3 years ago. At least you raised a decent billie.

Cheers Mick

Sorry for your loss , cant imagine what its like, i spit it just losing a rig let alone a rod and reel, you can insure your gear through sporting equipment insurance, it covers all of your sporting gear whether at home or being used, also if your cars stolen or on holiday its covered completly

Sad Day

Mon, 2009-06-22 21:23

Sad day to do the rod over the side but my old man did the same with an outfit at rotto and followed it up a few years later when throwing oily berley out for a few herring in thompsons bay managed to flick his wedding ring in the drink as well. I spent a fair bit of time looking for it but it now lives in davies locker as wellSurprised. Not good for him on either occasion but gives us some funny memories to rib him over.

Tue, 2009-06-23 20:24

hey there Chris

bummer about the news, I had a similar experience at Coral Bay, at the spot the new ramp is. I was fishing in ankle deep water with rod in beach rod holder, on the sand bar just off Monk Head and something took my line, ripped the rod out of the pipe and off it went into the deep. Luckily a long swim later managed to find the rod. Still don't know what it was to this day.

have you found work in Exxy or are you just enjoying life?? is there any sparky work?

Sorry mate it is a sad loss

Had the same thing happen to me with my partners Monster mesh rod and brand new Shim Saragosa 8000.

Mack attack and plastic rod holder on the Trailcraft pinged (steel ones in now). Still a Pricy combo but to our great surprise saw the R2S Triho floating on the surface and by pure fluke retrieved the lot. Some TLC and everything is back. Mine a lucky story, your SAD.
