Hey guys!
Just wondering if you can take your reels on the plane as hand luggage still? I'm pretty sure you can but some guy at a tackle shop said you couldnt anymore.
I dont want to let some of my gear out of my sight and also it will help with my weight allowance.. haha.
Thanks in advanve

No Line.
You can take the reels with your carry on. But they wont let you take any line on. So you will have to put your spools in your checked baggage.
That's what we did last year on our Montes trip.

i just took 8 reels (with line) on hand luggage to exmouth last week mate with Qantas link you should be fine but i have heard as C MAC said they can make you take your spools off because they think you are going to choke someone onboard

Ditto on the line. I took reels from the Uk to Norway spooled up no probs, though heard of others flying to north Norway having to surrender their spools of line (ouch!). Its down to each airports security and individual. I wouldn't risk it personally and pack the line in the checked in baggage.

I've flown with reel with line no problems, just no hooks, lures and sharp objects allowed.
I put all my reels in a reel carry bag and all they did was check for hooks on it them last time.
You can get a customs cleared doc from their website and if you e-mail them, they will give you a letter to confirm you can carry your reels onto a plane.
Fishing line is no more deadly than a belt or anything else on your purson, hell you could sow in a metal trace to your jacket or what ever, so don't let some over zealous tool at Customs get the better of you.

( USA rules and they normaly over the top and allow fishing gear, they even allow you too take fly's in your carry on luggage)

not that easy
"and if you e-mail them, they will give you a letter to confirm you can carry your reels onto a plane."
Not always true! I need to take a gas powerd soldering iron (empty) to kalgoorlie a while back with sky west, I thought I would do the right thing and email them that i needed it for work and they replied it was ok for me to take it on board (checked baggage) at the airport when asked if i had any dangerous objects in my case I thought i would be honest and tell them and showed them their letter....it meant nothing they wouldnt let me take it checked or not. it's how the operator feels at the time.

Actually they thought about
Actually they thought about taking my jigs off me flying exmouth -> perth, but there were no sharp hooks, so I asked them to get over it. Flying perth -> exmouth, they just scanned them and said pretty colours!

Why spoil your holiday with
Why spoil your holiday with the stress, easier to just put the spools in luggage and carry on the reels. Overheads are a pain, I had to put my ocea jigger in luggage to ONO........quite stressful in itself!

Yeah i have flown Perth to
Yeah i have flown Perth to Karratha and back with a bag full of reels including full spools.
Guess it depends who you get at the security check.
I'd have been gutted if I had to surrender all my line on the way up to the Montes trip!
Wont risk it again after hearing that
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

I might sound dumb
But why not put the reels in the main luggage. Is it for fear of it getting stolen??
I am sure that not many people on the XRay machine can tell the diff between a KMart reel and a Stella on XRay.
And if insured lost gear is covered but a bugger to prove. I am going to Tahiti and taking some light rods, reels are about $400 each for the 2 and I have no problems putting them in the main bags.
What is others opinion on this?

The only reason im putting
The only reason im putting them in my carry on is so there weight isnt calculated into my bagage allowance. Im cutting it pretty close... hahah. I'm taking about $3000 worth of reels as well, so better safe than sorry. Can see your point though Crasny, if i were only taking a few I wouldnt have any problem putting them underneath.

Just got this email back from customs....
Dear Pat,
Thankyou for your enquiry,
Customs have no restrictions with these goods, however your airline may request your goods go in your checked baggage.
Kind Regards,
Well, that doesnt really solve anything.
