Hello all.
First time poster, long time ghoster.
if money was no object and you had the choice to purchase any rod and reel combo, what would it be?
i understand the the Stellas/Saltigas etc will get a bit of a mention, but i want to talk about the old faithful, cant beat it, had it since before i was born type of combo.
My dad swears by his 1970s Mitchel spin with a even older Dunlop 9 ft rod and says that they dont make reels like that any more, and then proceeds to bag me out about my twin power and tcurve set up and how much of a waste of money it was and that i should track down a combo like his!!

Wow
Money no option, and will be with you forever!
Even though you said Stella's etc, for 1,2,5 and 6 Stella's of certain sizes with endless rod combos, Light boat Shimano Saltist 2 speed OH, Heavy boat OH cant beat the Gold Tiagra and then just decide which one.
But this bag will set you back some serious $$$$.
But they will be with you for years

Bloody hell Neels that is me 100%, except i have Saltiga 30T overhead instead of the saltist.
Actually i have the Twinpower 2500 jdm reel for light work.

Had to laugh Spanishmac
Typo, its a Shim Saltist on a Diawa Monster Mesh. Well I dont think you can beat the Eggbeating Stella's in any of the Non overhead applications. With the light boat rod/reel combo I would agree that there is various choices, even a small tiagra, but I love my Saltist because of smoothness. Twinpower for the light stuff, 100% spot on.

i agree the daiwa saltist is
i agree the daiwa saltist is a great lightweight reel that can pick up most light to med sportfish, wouldnt use on a bill or gt etc, but things like macks small tuna (50lb ish) sambos will be all good. just be careful as i can only get about 6kg drag off mine while still retaining no drag on the free spool, but on the website they say it will do 7.5kg of drag (which when you set to do theres about 1kg of drag when its set on freespool) which would be perfect fo 50lb braid.
still not getting you though, do you have a shimano slatist (didnt think they existed) or a daiwa saltist (what ive got)?

Older rods and reels...
Not going to enter the discussion on the first part (though I've just bought a Calcutta TE 400 and would always have something like it in my kit), but a comment on the second part re: the old rod and reels...I picked up much of my grandpa's gear when he died. Some good old stuff there - built like a tank. I'm proud to still have it and keep it well maintained and use it from time-to-time. But does it crack up to modern rods and reels...ummmmm, not really. Its not smooth, geometry of the spools not so good casting, bail action is way harsh, no infinite anti-reverse etc etc. Its sort of like saying that about an EK Holden that they don't build 'em like that anymore. Thank the good lord for that - I loved my old EK and would love one in the carport right now to take out on Sunday drives. But do you want it as a daily driver - not me. So, I keep the old Daiwa reel well maintained, pull it out from time to time and give it some work, then put it away til next I have the romantic urge to catch a fish with my grandpa's old reel.
NOW, when it comes to his old Alvey 6", that's an entirely different story! That comes out on every beach fishing trip :-)
