Submitted by thesupervisor on Fri, 2010-08-20 20:19
i have narrowed my reel choice to Daiwa SEAGATE 4000 DAIWA CALDIA KIX CUSTOM 4000
now the seagate im looking at has a ratio of 4.7.1
and the kix has 4.9.1 nothing in to me
i will be using mainly for sp and occasional jigging mabe some salmon and tailor
what reel would you choose and why?

Is there really a Seagate 4000?
Pretty sure its Seagate Light 4000PE or then you size up to the Seagate 4500

Oh it does exist? I probably
Oh it does exist? I probably wouldn't buy it, its the same body as the 4500, but with a larger spool arbor, check the weight, its 605g but the handle is OK.
The caldia kix is 395g but has the crappy sol handle.
Thats why I bought the bradia in this segment; better handle, certate gears, one more bearing =)

The Seagate is the same reel
The Seagate is the same reel as the local Saltist 4500 but just holds less line.
It is physically a much bigger reel than the Caldia Kix 4000. You can get larger knobs to suit the Caldia Kix 4000. RCS do a range to suit.

Yes I do understand the
Yes I do understand the Seagate is a low gear ratio reel and the Saltist is high, (2bb difference) apart from that every other physical part is the same.
To be exact, the Exceller 4500DA is the same physically as the Seagate 4000.
Question is, what rod are you planning to use??

Seagate has the hi and low ratio models. There are a few parts that are different. I just looked at mine.

Hi and Low Gear
Local Daiwa is Saltist for hi gear and Exceller for low gear.

Hhmmm,,,,,,, could be that
Hhmmm,,,,,,, could be that the spools and side trim and handle set screw caps have changed, as mine are definitely different. My trim plates are metal and are held on by screws and the handle set screw cover is turned metal and the spool is different as well. Could be the internals are the same. The two I have are current units as well or it could just be that the units for JDM are cosmetically different.

I think Honsu means the
I think Honsu means the local model equivalent is the Daiwa Exceler which is a 7 bearing reel, the Seagate is an 8 bearing reel, probably just a handle bearing different.

Ryan from Oceanside Tackle
Ryan from Oceanside Tackle uses (or used?) a Stella 4k and 30lb on his for sailfish and that reel is under 300g!
I reckon a Seagate 4000, or even a Caldia Kix 4k is total overkill, on that rod I'd fish 3k or 3500 max.

There are already plenty of
There are already plenty of threads about sambos, and catching sambos from the breeding aggregations on much less than 80lb is bad news, this reel will never do it. Too much of a chance you will either be feeding sharks, or losing gear. Its a different story on catching them inshore or whatever.
Keep the Penn 950 for the sambos and buy this reel for something else!

In that case, buy Daiwa
In that case, buy Daiwa 3000/3500, if you fish that with 20-30lb, snapper will never smoke you, it will handle dhufish and it will be fun with shallow-water sambos.

Nobody has...
The Seagate is a JDM reel and as such are not available outside of Japan and some Asian countries.
The local models are the Exceller DA and Saltist range.

I have a Seagate light 3500
I have a Seagate light 3500 and its is an awsome . Very different reel to the calida. I own a calida 4000 and a sol 3000. The segate feels alot more solid when winching up large fish. I use mine for soft plastis out on the five and have landed snapper to 10kg and dhu to 7kg.
Rayandannes were selling them but are sold out. They still have the 4500 which would make a great sambo reel. Im looking for another 3500 myself.
Pretty sure there is another difference to the saltist other than the bearing count
