Red throat emperor off Rotto
Submitted by wagyl on Tue, 2011-05-24 16:47
Went out today off Rotto in a strong easterly with a stong current running to the north and went to a 60m spot. Caught two dhuies, returned one, plus a size red throat emperor. I took a photo with my phone but have no idea how to post it. Haven't seen that before. Next week I'm going out to get some coral trout and red emperor, what's the chances?

Theres been a few people
Theres been a few people who've come across red throats out of Perth. As far as out of place fish go, they seem the most common demersal. Some even say there are somewhat permanent colonies on very specific types of bottom too. I wouldnt hold your breath on coral trout and red emps though :p (though, who knows, maybe once a decade?). Hit the same spot and you might in with a chance of another redthroat though.

Well, they're still not quite 'common' so there may be some skill involved, who knows :p

Plenty in 50 metres off Mandurah
And I agree with Hlokk, they seem to like particular hard coral ground - have got sick of catching them out there as I do not rate them on the tooth, that small fat accretion in the flesh puts me right off

I've posted on here before
that i know a bloke who has caught 2 Red Throats in the last 10yrs out from Prevelly (Margaret River) I was very sceptical untill a saw the photos with the shoreline in the background.
It's amazing how far out of there 'normal' range some fish species can be. Dhufish at Dorre Island anyone????

Have caught a few in the last year in the 40's - 50's off Dawesville / Mandurah. 2 off corally limestone, and the other from a weedbank. (was probably even more lost than the other couple!)
I just love Exmouth: Its a quaint little drinking town with a fishing problem!
