questions on tailor fishing

hi guys,

i've been fishing the river for a while, using plastics and lures with some success and i am now willing to try and get some fish from the sea!!problem is i've been trolling lures and throwing big poppers around in Mauritius and don't know how to fish in oz..

i have a 10' silstar and a matching shakespeare reel with 15lb mono on it. I'd like to get into some tailor and would like some advice as last night the guys around me were catching a few and i wasn't getting interest from the fish! i tried the moles and would like to try beach fishing, however i don't know the does and don't of beach fishing in perth and i don't want to annoy swimmers...

what set-up to use? what rig? what hook size? what bait? and where?

are metal slices worth a try or should i buy bait?

any special technique or retrieve? let it sit there or retrieve it?

as well is there any time and moon phase when the odds are better?

last question how to rig a bait with ganged hook for it to stay straight on the hooks?

any help or advice would be much appreciated, anything you don't want to post PM please

thanks guys

Baiting ganged hooks

Thu, 2009-01-22 14:28

To keep your bait on your ganged hooks, lay your hooks along your bait,eg,a mulie and work it so that the top hook will end up arount or through the eye.Start from your bottom hook pushing it through the bait, then the next one working your way to the last one which hopefully will go through the eye.If you start from the top hook the bait/mulie will always fall off.
The chrome slices work well, just belt it out as far as you can and wind in at a fast speed giving it an extra flick evry 5-or so turns of the handle.
Tailor usually bite best from 1 hour before sun up till about 1 hour after and the same at sunset but will bite for 3-4 hours after

I put a smaller hook on the end

Thu, 2009-01-22 14:53

On the end of the three gangs, [Size 4] With the small hook  [sizes two] ,So when the tailor bites the tail off the bait he gets hook first time,  And you can pick up the odd herring that way too

steve

And if you need abit of weight add a bullet weight above the top hooks

Hi Speedo

Metal slices certainly work here.
However, the most common method is with ganged hooks baited with mulies as Carnarvonite and Sherbs have said.
The most common beach and rock rig would be a paternoster if the wind is blowing.

However, the best method if you can get the right conditions is to bait cast an unweighted mulie.

Mornings and evenings are the best fishing times and a light south wester in the evening is normally a prime time for tailor.

A number of good spots include North and South Mole, Cottelsoe Groyne, Trigg Point, Hillarys Harbour main wall and many of the local beaches, particularly if there is nice gutter to throw your bait into.

Mulies

Thu, 2009-01-22 19:41

Hi Speedo, when using mulies if you cut the tail off at the knuckle it will also give you extra casting distance.

Keep Your Bait Moving (Beach)

Fri, 2009-01-23 18:30

Keep your unweighted mulie moving speedo, you cover more ground that way and stop the bait from sinking. Tailor are a)predatory and b) surface feeders so a moving bait at the top of the water column is the best bet from a beach.

And as Steve said, removing the tail of the mulie stops it from twisting around in the air when you cast it, you will get extra distance on the cast.

Retrieve slowly all the way to the shore, as I've had hits from tailor really close in.

Good luck mate

Artificial Mulie?

Sun, 2009-01-25 07:54

Great reponces Mates, Took me from square one to almost landing a fish. Your Tailor looks a lot  like the bluesifh found on the east coast of the states, vicious rascals, swimming teeth, great fighters, the smaller schoolies being better table fair, great smoked. Anyone target them with topwater? If so what do you use to match up a mulie? Anyone have an image of a Mulie? I guess it's a whitebait of some sort, would like to find a weblink with images of baitfish found in WA. Any suggestions? Thanks HJG             Shovel snow or fish?Whats a man to do?

Tailor are Blue Fish Maniac,

Sun, 2009-01-25 14:16

Tailor are Blue Fish Maniac, thats what they are called in the states.

What do you use to target them there ?

As for others i have never tried cutting the tail off,,when i wind it in and the tails gone they don't touch it anymore anyway,,how many cut the tail off ?and does your catch rate drop or  no difference ? for me its the most important part of a Mulie. (tail)

Great tip on adding a smaller hook to the gang Sherbert,,might hook a few more now.

bluefish / tailor

Mon, 2009-01-26 10:42

Yo shorty, in the states a tailor is one who adjasts clothing or garments to fit, if you can afford one, otherwise you wear whats there.  as fore blue fish  they are aggressive feeders and will strike almost anything fast and flashie for artificials,  best bet is a quick jirky retrieve, a gas on topwater; for larger fish chunked or live bait, bunkers = small shad, pogies = small manhaden. Both are oily  schooling  junvenile  baitfish that provide most the feed for stripers and larger bluefish on our part of the east coast. I dont gang when i use

Sun, 2009-01-25 15:18

I dont gang when i use mulies i just snell 2-3 hooks as i find its alot easier to stick the mulies on the hook and i dnt have to worry about size. circle hooks i can bury deep and still have the hook well exposed. then again thats just me and im sure everyone else swears by gangs

snelling hooks

Sun, 2009-01-25 17:13

how do you snell hooks together? doesn't it increase the risk of the fish biting off your mono if going for half of the mulie?

I have never been bitten off

Sun, 2009-01-25 17:57

I have never been bitten off on 10lb leader let alone 20-30. i would even go 40 if they are really on the bite. Flurocarbon is alot harder for fish to bite through anyway, and circle hooks 90% of time pin them in the corner of the mouth so they wouldnt even be in biting range of the mono

Sun, 2009-01-25 17:44

Get a knot tying book, some great ones out there, but I dont suggest you use it for Taylor. Just ask on of the mad FW member who got one to bite him on UtubeSurprised how sharp the fangs are.

i dont find cutting tails

Tue, 2009-01-27 14:36

i dont find cutting tails off puts them off

if they are on the bite well they arent fussy

in greenough i experimented with gangs and 3 snells but i was getting bitten off by big ones on 25lb leader

snells work but gangs work better IMO

also with gangs the bait presents much more nicely
