Question about Fisheries Researchers.
Submitted by Rodrat on Mon, 2008-08-11 16:00
Hi
What powers if any do fisheries research officers have?
Coming back in to point peron ramp on monday and when
we pulled up to the wash down bay a gentleman came over
and said he was a fisheries research officer and he wanted
to ask me a few questions. Basicly the ins and outs of a ducks backside!
Anyway one question he asked was did we have any fish on board.
We didnt and i told him no. I was assuming that he didnt believe me as
he then said, well if you do i have to sight them. I was pretty sure that you dont
have to answer any questions or show them anything,is that right?
Cheers

See them
You can be asked to show them, but can refuse and nothing can be done from there.

we want these guys on our side, as they will stop the families that go out and rape and pillage the local spots of undersize fish.
be polite and hopefully they will do the same in turn.
ive had nothing but positives from these guys in the past.

spot on wicksey
Spot on Wicksey. If you want data to prove that there is either fish or not, then this is a major indicator for knowing what is really going on. Misinformation is only screwing yourself ultimately.

Thanks Ryan!
LOL! Yeah, I can fully understand any fisherman who is passionate for sustainment of our fisheries wanting to, as you say, busting chops. But I suspect, it's a very fine correct line that needs to be tread.
Cheers for the best wishes mate!

Fisheries
We let Fisheries and Fisheries volunteers in CPBA as they all have to do a job, yes if you are polite and co-operate everbody is happy, some members get quite annoyed but they are usually the ones going out everyday of the week (weather permitting) getting their limit of squid, herring or what ever they catch. I always say if you've got nothing to hide go for it, which I did one day and hubbie said why did you let fisheries in my boat and I said we've got nothing to hide everything is legal.

Well i reckon that there
Well i reckon that there arent enough around and they should be allowed to check what youve caught. Most of us do the right thing and dont have anything to hide.Adam i didnt know you could refuse them access to check out whats been caught, and is probley not general knowledge which is probley a good thing. Prior planning and preperation prevents piss poor performance

Fisheries Officers Powers as I interpret it...
I interpret the Fish Resource Management Act 1994 (the act) Part 16 (Sec 191) a Fisheries Officer (or party with such bestowed rights under the act) does have the right of access and inspection without refusal.

difference
Green shirts (FMO's) have the power to search vessels regardless of refusal. Red Shirts (Research) - no power to search vessels (depends upon delivery thou if you really want a look) - Yellow shirts (VFLO) I have no idea.
As for kids on bow rails, pet hate of mine as well - only takes one bump for them to become prop food. Mind you, I dont say anything because its none of my business.
