Problem with Saragosas?
Submitted by Jaso on Fri, 2009-04-03 14:38
I was shopping around for a Shimano Saragosa in a 4000 size today and I was given a very negative assessment by a tackle shop owner today, who recommended a Stradic in the same size. The advice was that too many Saragosas come back with the back plate coming off, or the gearing shot, and that in general they are not very well made.
I was quite keen on the Saragosa for the higher gear ratio, and that it did have a reasonable drag pressure (10kg). But am wondering now if I should be looking at the Stradic or the Sustain.
Are there known problems?

I dont think you would need
I dont think you would need 10kg of drag for a 4000 size reel, not practically anyway. I havent had any problems with any ive dealt with, but then again I havent had much to do with the smaller ones. Big ones (14000 and 18000) seem ok

sol 4000
forget the shimano and go the diawa sol
plenty of drag, good gearing and spare spool
tough reel which wont break the bank.
plenty of good options above the sol also
my next reel will be a sol 4000 (already got a 2000-2500)

I have the Gosa 6000 and no
I have the Gosa 6000 and no issues and I think the store fella is probably right in the other reels are better but also have the higher price tags to match. Its just a trade off, seriously the Gosa 4000 should be fine.

kelvin8tor had an 18000
kelvin8tor had an 18000 saragosa which he tried to use on Pilbara GT's, the last fish he got smashed his reel almost apart, stuffed the anti reverse and destroyed the drag. The fish wasnt big and drag was only set to about 8kg's
dont really think they are suitable for heavy applications

lol... tough training
lol... tough training ground.
Seriously though, I think the Saragosas should be fine provided you don't ask too much from the reel. 10kg is waaay too much for any 4000 sized reel... you'll want to be running atleast PE6 to get any benefit from that sort of drag.
