possibly strange question but none the less :P

Well i want to catch a stingray, I mostly fish for the fun and land based fishing around here doesnt really offer much that will give me a good work out (without spending countless hours searching for that elusive mulloway) i dont know if anyone will be able to help me here but just wondering what rig, bait, tides and location will help me find some sting rays.

Or even better some help with landbased sharkfishing :)

Landbased Stingray!!

Thu, 2009-08-27 19:37

Will try and keep it simple....
Rig: Anything that lets the bait sit on the ocean floor.
Bait: Anything that resembles or smells like a fish.
Tides: Makes no difference.
Location: Anywhere on the ocean floor..... preferably a sandy area.

If the above fails just fish next to me LOL.

On a serious note I have caught them off Hillaries Marina, off the beach at Busselton and off the rocks at the cut at Mandurah. They are everywhere.
Cheers,
David

Fish on hook in a sandy hole... hopes of massive Mulloway. IMO guys who go looking to catch these shit fish do it at their own expense.. plenty of terminal tackle and new reels frequently. Catch and release is often out of the question as you need some fairly ugly gaffs or other forms of landing gear to get theM to shore.

I hate stingrays!!!!!

no expert

i'm no expert but from my experience and watching others,

snell a couple of 7/0 gamagatsu hooks and put on any type of bait, usually mulie or herring or something along those lines. You can use a paternoster type rig with a snapper lead on the bottom, bomb that out on your big gear and wait. Use any line from 30lb up depending on the ray and a 80lb ish leader. you must have a gimbel belt other wise you will be sore! lots and lots of line also helps

Use fresh herring for bait, stingers love them.

If you cast half a herring/mullet out in to Koombana bay from the causeway that runs out to the old Bunbury jetty.About 100 metres out from the naval cadets headquarters is best.Just thump it out and leave it sit, with the sea breeze behind you its not going to need a sinker to hold it there.100lb mono for a trace about a metre long will do fine.
The area there used to be known as stingray surf before that section of the jetty was burnt/pulled down in the seventies. You should be able to hook into the real big black ones plus the odd eagle ray for a bit of line burning.

You can have all the ones I hook Chris

If you realy want to catch one. Go down to South Mole one night. Burley up with heaps of cubed up mulies. Throw out a mulie on a running ball sinker rig. Have a fairly heavy mono leader and you are just about guaranteed to hook onto a ray.

When i was at school, we used to go out on the flates in very very shallow water and cast little metal spinners over their heads then wind it as fast as we could and jag em. doesn't help you much, just thought i would share.

sharks

Fri, 2009-08-28 21:43

if u go to woodman point jetty at night u can either balloon and then sometimes get like lil sharks usually about 5ft max. if u then just lob out a hole scaly on a sinker then u can get either muloway, bonito, some sharks like gummies and things and then also rays. but if u really want rays go rotto. after about 30 mins of fishing with berley and u can see about 6 at a time. as for rigs either just use a ballon with a wire trace or a big sinker with a wire trace.

wouldn't use a paternoster
bait must be on floor so it can land on it
i'd stick a close ended burley cage filled with stinking tuna log below weight , then a swivel to trace to gangs
good luck with that
