Port Smith

Hi,
Planning a trip to Port Smith in May next year for 12 days. Does anyone know what tides are best to fish there. I have a 4.2 mtr punt is it worth taking or do you reckon there's enough shore based fishing to save dragging the boat a couple 1000 kms.
Any feedback on the place / fishing / weather in May would be appreciated.

The water at Port Smith moves
The water at Port Smith moves a long way, plan to have neap tides somewhere during your stay. Spring tides makes it very hard to fish in the creek/lagoon and can dirty up the water out front.
Dry season easterlys start blowing around May which is good for LB fishing from the cliffs, balloon or float baits for macks and longtails, bottom bash for just about every other tropical species.

Take your punt, easy
Take your punt, easy to launch in the creek and get a feed of muddies. There is a rock bar that runs across the mouth of the creek that goes alright for mangrove jacks, golden trevs etc if your there at the right time. Lots of reef and patchy ground straight out the front, if the wind allows you can travel up the coast to Gourdan bay for some shallow water bluebone fishing.

Great spot
Mid tide is the most popular time with regulars launching in the lagoon, the park staff will tell you what' the go is.I have been twice and love the place.you will kick yourself if you don't take the boat.
May is a good chance to be blowing its arse off from the east, but often drops right off in the arvo giving time for a nice little session out of the lagoon, awesome country up and down the coast too look at but I think some off the close creeks are limited to the traditional owners for fishing.
if you have a chart plotter 15 Kim's nearly straight out from the lagoon is justice shoals.
this spot I usually has a dinghy or 3 on it in most days in the nomad season so sees some pressure but has some stonker coral trout on it .
i caught one around 6kg there and saw more similar size at the cleaning table with lots of rankings too.
the one I caught hit a 2.5m diviing rapala in 20 m depth too which surprised me.
