hey guys looking into getting a poppin rod and reel, not too sure on what size, was thinkin on a stella 10000 and about a 8", 8-12kg rod.
or should i get something bigger? like a 18000/20000 and 15-24kg
mainly targeting gt's ect, ect but would be good to have a alrounder rod and reel.
cheers

depends on what size trevors
depends on what size trevors your trying to catch .... i would go a minimum of 50lb (ive got a stella 20000 running 80lb) ... im also looking at a second hand saltiga 6000gt at the moment as a spare for 50lb ...
last year at exxy the 50lb did the job fine for what i caught (nothing huge) .. im hoping to one day catch a big GT ...even if ive got to pay one of our karratha or exxy site-mates to take me out :P

how much are you willing to
how much are you willing to spend and will you be popping from a boat or the shore??
If from a boat go a shorter rod (under 7' to 7'6")as it will be more comfortable and easier to fish with, but from the shorego a longer rod (7'6" to 8' and beyond) to belt your popper out further.
The price you are willing to pay will depend on the gear you choose. Stellas are great reels and it could double as your jig reel as well. Talk to jay burgess (a member on here) as i think he has the 10k, 18k and the 20k stellas and find out which size he prefers for popping. If it was just for popping i probably go the 10k for the gear ratio. Or if you are a daiwa man have a look at the dogfight by daiwa, a bloody good reel with lots of grunt, but they are more exxy.
Daiwa also make a good entry level popping rod called the monster mesh, which are good. There are plenty of other rods, but the budget and fishing style will help narrow it down more so you can make a better choice.

heavier
I won't fish with anything less than 80lb personally. To the uninitiated, it seems like alot, but have a look at some videos - even for small specimens (sub 20kg) you need to put alot of pressure on a fish, if you are targeting them specifically. An 8-12kg graphite rod would struggle to just make the cast with most poppers I would think.
If you want to buy one, make sure you get something that is adequate, and not have to upgrade for a while.
A STL 10,000 is a tried and tested reel, and very affordable these days.
Off the shelf I can recommend a Stella 10000 and Shimano GT-special, loaded with 80lb minimum. This should be ok for most chuggers, pencils and heavy stickbaits.

What KC is talking about in
What KC is talking about in terms of the reels are the older FA model, NOT the 08 models.
Basically 50lb minimum for fun. It really depends on where you hook them. Rough country....go heavy. Open water go lighter. I personally run 80lb for GT fishing, simply coz I cant afford to loose 17 poppers is 4 days.

Agree with everything that
Agree with everything that Kasey said, go a minimum of 80lb braid and a rod rated to atleast PE6-8. You'd be surprised how much pressure you need to stop smaller GTs.
People who've bought 15-24kg rods are usually looking to upgrade after their first trip, so make sure you get something that you're not going to have to upgrade straight away.
I think the GT special is a great choice for people looking to get into popping. Brad has one and it has plenty of balls for stopping big fish.
As far as reels go, Stella 10000FA is awesome, cheap now too. Load it with PE6 80lb or PE8 100lb and it will be able to land pretty good fish. I only bought the 18000 because I wanted to run PE10 130lb.

I popped the monties with a stella 10k and tcurve 15-24kg spin stick running pe 6 80lb. Definatly go heavier, wanna run at least 100lb min on the stella 1800sw and a tokara 60 on order. Wouldn't dare go lighter than 80lb and as the boys said you'll be surprised how hard a 10kg fish will go in gnarly terriortory.
