Poppers & Stickbaits
Submitted by WODF on Mon, 2008-10-27 09:54
What are some good poppers, stickbaits or any surface lure I can use to throw at angry fish?? I’d be targeting big trevs, macks, tuna, coral trout, cobia or anything that’s hungry enough to have a go at these lures. 80g is probably the heaviest I could throw and I don’t wanna pay big bucks for a single lure. I like the looks of the Halco Roosta 135’s and R2S Dumbell’s but that’s it so far so looking for advice. Particularly interested in the stickbaits. Any recommendations are welcome and all info will be appreciated.
Thnx

Certaintly one of my preferred methods of fishing :D. I like the roostas, both as poppers and flat out wind stickbaits.
As brenz said for most of the lures. If you head into a tackle shop you should get a reasonable idea of whats available. Different types have difference actions depending on what you want.
If you want a cheap, long casting lure then have a look at the richter plugs. They are just a lump of plastic with some lead inside and a hook but they work.

Pencil Poppers
Cotton Cordell pencil poppers...they are rear-weighted so cast far, have virtually NO action; you simply wind them back in as fast as you can and skitter them across the top. Bluewater sells them for $19.50, motackle for $13.50 and $5US from Bass Pro Shops on line. There are two 6 inch models, 1 and 2 ounces, and an 8 incher (200 mm) which I believe is 3 ounces (around 80 grams).
Have had success with them on salmon at Dunny and small tailor at the Dawesville Cut. Very simple, yet effective, piece of gear.

Great
Cotton Cordell poppers are great. Still got 2 left that are probably 15 years old now. Blue on white and green on white, dont seem to be able to get them ones now.
Used to use them for mulloway in the port river in Adelaide.

Salmon, Queenfish etc
I've had plenty of success with the Yozuri Hydro pencils, pretty good castability and easy to work across the surface.
Rapala X-Rap Walks and Skitter Walks aren't that exotic but they go alright as well.

Tango dancer
Mate try the Cultiva tango dancer, the transparent one particulaly. Surface feeding pelagics and angry jacks love them. Zip and Ziggy also work well but i find them harder to get. (sounds like I am a Cultiva man!!!!)

It's a list..
Thanks guys, I’ve made a list of some poppers and stickbaits I’d be willing to give a crack. Let us know what you all think.
Poppers -
Halco Roosta
R2S Dumbell
Strike Pro Lazerlite
Cotton Cordell Pencil
Stickbaits -
Nomad Dogtooth
Black Jack Ulua
Daiwa Dorado
FCL Labo Squid Pencil
Gunz tailwalk
Cultiva Tango Dancer
Shimano Ocea
Also when i actually get the lures would it be an idea to retro fit them with Owner stinger66 barbless trebles and hyperwire split rings?? I would imagine so. Thanks again guys.
Cheers

1. the minnow-shallow diver;
2. the bull- popper; and
3. the slider- walk the dog
but they state that the lure actually changes colour as you use it.......new fishing technology.
i'd certainly try em..

hmm
hmm,
I thought you were looking for poppers under 80g. I like the Miss Carna and Bull Chop (40g). Otherwise there's a few poppers here that are interesting:

They may not all fit your budget though

You can bloop them like
You can bloop them like poppers, or your can just wind continuously as you would work a stickbait (it wont have the same action depending on the stickbait type of course). Best lure available? Probably not. Versatile and cheap? Yep

poppers
i'd ask ryan and co. at oceanside/ tackleshack crew or woodvale gotone (doush) if they can order them in,
i order my yozuri through gotone in bunno but i've only just noticed the new range, otherwise order then online and they will be mailed over.
use your fishwrecked membership and you should get a discount....
personally for the price i like halco roosta, river2c but if ya can get anything on speacial then grab em....i'm a popper/stickbait collector.
sometimes it's the ultra cheap popper out of the sale basket that nails em.....thats fishing.
