PB KG Warnbro Sound

My son and I had planned to head out towards the Sisters chasing KG's on Wednesday morning but with morning temps hovering around zero it was the very gentlemenly time of 10.30am before we finally got the boat in the water and headed out across the bay from Bent St. with a building Northerly behind us.
With a fairly decent chop and murky water it was difficult to pick a spot between the weed patches so we just played it safe and stuck fairly close to the islands for our first drop, confident that we were on a sandy bottom and wouldn't be continually hooking up on weed.
It was only a couple of minutes before the chicken laying pellets were doing their thing and we started to bring in a few nice Sand whiting - not huge, but nice and fat - perfect size for a few fillets - but not the KG's we were hoping for.
The wind had calmed down a bit so we decided to head North East towards the Markers and look for our preferred ground of sand and weed patches.
As we were pretty close to the Sisters we decided to motor over just for a look see along the reef before we relocated to our new spot. To our surprise a school of maybe 50 - 100 Salmon passed under the boat but before we could scramble to get a lure on the one and only rod on the boat up to the challenge they were long gone - but things were looking up.
We headed back over towards the markers and managed to find a nice spot of ground. After a couple of minutes on anchor we had our first KG on board - not a huge one at around 32cm but it was a good start.
Rio started to bring in a few nice size Herring - Awesome! We had an order for a minumum of twelve from the wife for Thai Fish cakes so we knew we would be in for a warm welcome when we got home.
Next up I had a mighty hit on my high tech $19.95 Compleat Angler kids combo and I could hardly believe my eyes when a snake of a KG hit the surface. Rio swooped in with the net and I was wrapped to crack a personal and boat best KG that just managed 40 cm on the ruler.
With my mouth drooling at the the thought of big KG fillets deep fried in virgin olive oil and beadcrumbs we fished on and managed a few more nice KG's and our target of twelve Herring before the crap fish moved in and we decided to up stumps and call it a day.
Very simple rigs - just a sliding ball sinker running up to a wide gap hook and fresh frozen Safety Bay squid for bait.
A great day out and you could eaily reach this spot in a small boat (weather permiting of course) - heck you could kayak it from Port Kennedy if you're keen but there's quality fish out there - I wouldn't have believed you could get KG's that big in the Sound if I hadn't seen it for myself.
We'll be back...

I don't have enough fingers and toes
I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the number of times I've lost and seen lost KGs when lifting them into the boat without bothering to use a net.

I did the same a few weeks
I did the same a few weeks ago and dad and i were very surprised at the size of kgw in the sound. This one was our first and hit the 40cm also just drifting through the sand holes In 3-4m

Great to see beau - we had
Great to see beau - we had pretty much given up on KG's in Warnbro after a few lean years of struggling to even get any size ones - used to be a lot more consisitent for us 5 or 6 years ago. Hopefully they seem to be making a comeback.
We were inspired by Anyfishwilldo's post from a couple of weeks back http://hooked.fishwrecked.com/forum/first-days-fishing-new-tub to get out there and check it out and were sure glad we did.
Been checking around the net a bit over the last couple of days and when you start seeing 50 & 60cm versions out there it's getting us excited to get out wide and try for some of the real big boys.

great report and vid
Good one Red Dog.. Happy to see some good KG's coming from the sound. KG's are next on my list to catch as I've never targeted whiting and am keen to get after them. Bent Street is 5 minutes from my house so it's a great place to launch from when I'm after a feed of squid so I'll get down there in the next couple of weeks and give it a crack.. cheers
