No satellite signal

hi fellas,

On sat morning I took the boat out to try my new sounder.  The sounder works great though for some reason my GPS is playing up.

Usually when I turn it on after a couple of minutes it detects all the satellites and it fires up. However, yesterday it stayed on the "acquiring signal" screen when occasionally a satellite would appear then drop off the screen.  After an hour or so I gave up.

When I got back I tried restarting the GPS and resetting it back to factory settings though I'm still getting the same problem.

The sounder I have is a Navman 5380.  I was wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar problem?  Or perhaps have some suggestions?

If I can't get it working then I'll take it back to Challenge Marine though hopefully I can avoid that.

cheers

Wayne

its an external aerial which is mounted just up behind the GPS - in the corner of the console.  here's another pic showing where the aerial is.

Do you think the new sounder could be interferring with it?

8120 does it occasionally

I spray the antenna plug with inox regularly and, additionally, if you still have problems go into the sat menu - for some odd reason ours occasionally decides not to use some satellites - appears to be voltage spike related as we note it when the batteries have been a little flat after a long layoff.

In the menu you can tell it ito use the sats and it immeidately acquires position and then doesn't happen again for months

Cheers fellas - I will try all that has been suggested.  allrounder - you could be onto something as it has only started playing up since the sounder was installed...

We have a weimaraner too named Mal.  We have never taken him on the boat.  He is 11yrs old now and likes his comfort.

Mal is a really nice good tempered animal.  He coped well with the expanding family and loves giving the kids a big lick.

i have 2 gps units sitting right next to a 585 sounder and i have never had that prob unless it has something to do with the alli dash they are siting on, have you checked that there are no damaged spikes in the plug that goes into the sounder as that has happened to me

it wont be the fact

Mon, 2009-10-19 05:20

that the sounder is near the gps it will be that the arial is near the sounder.I am guessing that your arial Russ is away from the units.

Mon, 2009-10-19 13:27

Hi Wayne, I fished a fishing comp on Saturday and my mate also had the same problem with his Garmin GPS not aquiring sats. Bit strange though as everyone elses GPS worked.

My Navman has had times when

Wed, 2009-10-21 09:03

My Navman has had times when it was slow to pick up a signal ............. as some one stated above usually the old off/on trick fixes it. After all it is just a computer and the off/on button fixes ALL computer problems.

Sounds obvious but make sure that the aerial is covered over by a bit of rag etc
