night boat fishing

hi all ive been slowly building my nerve and experiance and doing night boat trips out from hilliarys

have tried 11pm fished through till 12midday

2am starts and lots  bearly  and different baits

ive got all my saftey gear lights etc just need a heater now damn it gets cold

alough ive only managed to catch eels lots of them and what a mess they  make

the real fish seem to arrive at 7am is there anything im doing wrong?

i thought the snapper and kgs would be up for a night feed

ive got some nice lumps marked both inside the 3 mile and out  but only eels? does this mean the ground is good?

planing a trip out tonite weather permiting

would appericate any advice

thanks

night fishing

night fishing rocks ! what techniques are you using? i have found unweighted mulies are the go bottom bouncing is useless as tits on a bull i fish no more than 9 mt deep and the biggest snapper to date is 13.1 kg but plenty of snapper round 2-5 kg a member here even landed a nanygaiat one of our spots and thats no joke ! there are some dhuies that come around but i have found them few and far between on the shallow water hope this helps

have been using bottom rigs

Sat, 2009-07-11 16:04

have been using bottom rigs and floating mulies

the eels go for them hard  and mess up my wire traces

i normally fish 10 to 25 mtrs prefer the deeper water i feel safer at night

looks good for tonite so ill try some shallow stuff off trigg

Hit and miss...

...for me, same as daytime! I like to driftbait the five fathom bank out of Mandurah, usually using mulies or strips of fresh caught skippy ( and this time of year there are heaps of those out there!). Some nights nothing, others have been a good mix of snapper, 50cm kgs, blackarse, dhuies, etc.

I don't look at it as being a better time to be out there, more like, due to work/kids' sport/family obligations, the ONLY time I can get out there! It also helps when it's not cray season (like now) so I'm not having to dodge craypots in the dark!

i ussually fish from 5pm till about 3 or 4 am mate

Sun, 2009-07-12 12:23

and fish lumps inside the three mile - theres usualy snapper around at night and heaps of snook aand herring - also caught some niced sized sharks up 2 about 8 or 9 ft long - heaps of port jacksons eagles and banjos - if your not catchin any pinkies try fishin with the lightest amount of lead you can get to the bottom with and small hooks and light leaders - try not to throw the anchor in and drop sinkers as well as noise will spook big wily pinks - like bream fishing - and dont forget if you find a good school of pinkies fish for the future cos there be more fish next time if you chuck some back

Using wire will spook a lot of the fish and you will only get

Tue, 2009-07-14 07:51

dumb shit fish. Go 80-120pound tough leader like 10X, dont need fluoro but slightly better. Even this big line might scare away the good fish, then go lighter and expect a few bustoffs but it would be oooglies anyway.

Cheers

Neels

We up here in Karratha have a lot more bities and I would never use wire!!

Anchor up, and have a steady

Sun, 2009-07-12 14:19

Anchor up, and have a steady stream of diced mulies going out for burely.

Drift bait mulies down into your burely trail and bound to find fish.

Always get fish at night at anchor as long as you have a good trail going. try fish just off the lumps

Your experience pretty much reflects what I have

encountered when fishing at Hillarys marina.
The fish are few and far between at night - although burleying helps - but as soon as the sun comes up they come on the bite.
