They do warn you against it, whilst I can't see how you would lose everything just by pushing it in, its not like you can open it on a computer anyway.
You need the navionics card reader to read the card it comes with the nav planner software. any normal card reader will ruin the card also. I bought nav planner software from the states for under a third of the price you pay here and it works great for trip planning storing spots etc..

You can't read the map
You can't read the map without additional software ($$$), you may also ruin the card so it will no longer work in a sounder.

Iknow a few people who have tried this and it corrupted the card which means buying a new one.
As Till says you need the reader for it and the software.
