Mt Barker under threat from bushfire
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Mon, 2009-03-16 14:07
News.com.au headlines above. The fire is about where Dreamweaver's house is on the Western outscrirts of the town and just behind the hospital. Let's hope Colin and his wife are OK and their property etc remains safe. I will give Colin a call a little later.

Thanks Guys! All's well!
My wife came rushing into the Court House at 12.00 and we came back up from Albany. The fire has gone right around us - up to our fence line. Fantastic effort by all concerned. The guys on the medical center dropped everything and hosed our place down and a bunch even pushed the boat across the road (bloody good effort - it was locked so couldn't be towed.)
Will post some picks soon!
Thank God for the water bombers!
Dropped two cartons off to the fire station and left my number if they need a hand and have a spare pair of fire retardent overalls, flash cape, back pack and hard hat
So all's well - thanks again for your concern guys!

That's right Roberta
From what I've been told, they evacuated the hospital across the road (on the non fire side of the road) and the child care center. Yes; at 16:15, the water bombers have stopped.

Thanks Andy!
LOL - Have to catch them first
As far as I know, no lives or homes lost - not around us anyway. Still waiting reports over the ridge - thanks heeps for the best wishes.
Fantastic how everyone pitched in - there was fire engines, planes, helicopters, police, graders, bob cats, water carters by the dozens - bloody beautiful to watch. Human spirit and cooperation at it's very very best!

Fortunately, there's no stock around us, mind you there's chooks down the road LOL
Yeah, awesome effort with the boat - at a mate's place on the other side - canopy's and carpet make food tinder

Top pics Colin It is incredible how low those bombers go
Looking at a few of those it is a pity you didn't have any herring left out on a smoking rack.

Yeah, thank God, could have been a lot worse and those bombers ARE worth their while. I was talking to one of the ladies at the fire station and she advised that the outcome could have been a LOT worse without them.
Those bombers are hard to photograph too, they move VERY quickly, especially when they are only 50m above your house.

Yes Colin. I did ring your mobile
Only because we cared LOL... Good to see everything turned out OK. Keeps you on your toes mate. I said to Wendy that you were awefully close to some pristene bush when we were down there. Less fuel now and more time for planning.
Cheers, Vince

Thank you to you and Wendy (and again others) for caring mate! You're right, that undergrowth hasn't been back burned for a lot of years and that was a lot of fuel on the floor. Well, there isn't now and we and everyone else on the western strip of MB were VERY lucky.
The photographer from the Albany Advertiser (a (n Albany) local paper was on our property taking photos.
And you're right about planning. Yesterday, the time and day of the fire didn't allow for planning - it was basically all over before we got home from work.

Thanks Russ and Sandy! Mate! Vivaldi on a stratavarious (sp) wouldn't have sounded sweeter! Yeah - bloody hard to get in frame - especially when zooming (them and the camera LOL)

Sure was Gus! Yeah, I'm still overwhelmed, chocked and teary (ok, I'm a snag LOL) about the extend that everyone pitched in. The slabs were the least we could do!

Cheers Ian! Absolutely right there mate - yes; we can breath easier (hard to breath last night though with all the smoke LOL). Just shows why understory/floor controlled burning is so essential!
Apparently it was caused (as reported) by Western Power workers dropping live wires.
