yeah i always thought it was 2 as well.i cant see the the point in using anymore for the simple fact that you can only keep your bag limit anyway unless its catch and release and even then 2 is plenty.

I was under the impression a gang counted as one with a maximum of three per rod?
So in theory you could use a gang plus 2 single hooks on one line? not a rig Ive used but thought this would be ok?

The rod count is correct.
The rod count is correct. Max of 2 rods in use at a time and max of 3 sets of hooks per rod/rig. A set of gangs is one hook, doesnt matter how many are ganged up.

Does a snell of hooks count as one set?
Don't quote me but I would think two hooks snelled on one trace would be classed as one set. However if you were to snell a dozen or so hooks together on the one trace I am sure that would be seen differently though, which makes it an interesting question.

fishing from land jettys etc is maxium 2 rods or handlines and m
must be attended with max 3 hooks or 3 gangs per line.
No limit on rods reels from a boat just the number of hooks per line...
Althought I do know in QLD there are boat limits on the number of rods alowed on board.

I would've thought max rods
I would've thought max rods would be same on boat...and if a gang was classified as one hook in theory... I suppose you could have.... 8 x 6/0 hooks ganged on a gardie as bait..surely there must be a max you can have ganged ...

your links of hooks will
your links of hooks will only be as long as your bait, so I dont think its gonna be an issue. Im sure there's no one out there who would use an eel and bait it on a looooong set of gangs or snelled hooks.... be a bit more realistic....

" be a bit more realistic. "
no one ...other than you mentioning eels...the example was a garfish and its a legit question about the # of hooks on a gang ...to ascertain whether there was a definitive amount ...at this point it seems there isn't

And IGFA rules?? I
And IGFA rules??
I believe 2 hooks per rig/ per rod is the limit. A treble hook is counted as 3 hooks. All must be fixed, no sliding hooks.
Just thought i would add that as im not a fan of gang hooking. 2 hooks is more than enough.

That doesnt even make sense
That doesnt even make sense lol. What about all the breaming lures with two sets of trebles, doesn't that mean it has 6 hooks?

Seems that trebles/gangs are considered to be 1 hook, but are only legal to use on plugs/poppers/rapals. Odd, i always understood them to be classed as 3 hooks.. as there are 3 hooks soldered together. Have fished a few comps in the past that allow a max of two hooks only and require lures to also be fitted with only a single double hook or two single hooks.

ummm, think your wrong on
ummm, think your wrong on the treble mate. should be counted as one hook. as flangies said, all bream lures and lures in general with two sets of gangs would be illegal if that was the case.
gang = 1 set
snell = 1 set
treble = 1 hook

the rules are land based a
the rules are land based a maximum of 2 rods are allowed. and from what i have read and heard from many sources the max number of hooks you can have is 3 sets of hooks, so if you want to run 3 sets of gangs that is ok but a bit mad
. that is the reason that the baitchaser rigs are now set at 3 hooks unlike the older ones that had 10 hooks, you can still get them but are illegal to use

Well said , And another
Well said , And another reason why i recommend the mustad packs that come in two sets of 3 baitchasers, and doesn't need modifcation, has sinker loop and swivel at top as normal

Straight from the fisheries website
Page 15 of their pdf download.
Fishing gear
(FRMR Part 4A, Division 2, Regulation 64C, 64E)
Rods, lines and hooks – Recreational anglers may have a
maximum of three hooks or three gangs of hooks per line.
Shore-based anglers may use a maximum of two fishing lines.
Rods and lines must be attended.

But I admit it does not answer all questions which doesn't surprise me. It is the same as any reg or standard (Open to interpretation)
) with a maximum of 3 "hooks" whether single, ganged or snelled( I would argue that the maximum hooks allowed would be a combination of leaders and not the way they are set up.)
Doesn't make mention of maximum lines from boating and doesn't specify meaning of ganged hooks....
My Interpretation is that I am allowed 2 lines per person FROM SHORE (Anyone would be crazy to have more from a boat unless they are on a big one
I am sure I will be corrected if wrong
