Mr Athanasslies described his catch as ``a beautiful fish'' and said
sharks were much more intelligent than most people realised.
Mr Athanasslies said he kept the shark's head for a trophy.
And this blokes business is apparently about teach people how to land big fish. If this one went back alive at least he would have given one of his "clients" a chance at a thrill.
Can't land big bronzies in WA anymore.....buggers have put a size limit on all whalers, 700mm from dorsal fin to fin near tail, works out to about 1.5mtrs in total length. Probaly not a bad thing as the little ones are the best to eat anyway.
What is the point of killing it? you can bet he didnt eat it most men would just measure their whatsits to show how big they are! in his rights yes but morally wrong as stevef was saying that is one less for his clients to catch or does he need to show them how to beat it's head in too? I think a few people need to think about what they do when fishing.
To all the virgins..............Thanks for nothing!
don't get what your saying fishy we all target different things and we are all out to get the big one and we take pics of it can't see anything wrong with it.
I thought the big ones where no good to eat so as I said Why take it? if they do get eaten great... I just dont think they will be, if they are they'll be eating shark for a hell of a long time. I just hate to think they will get dumped.
To all the virgins..............Thanks for nothing!
so let me get this right fishy, what your saying is that it was wrong to keep it but if it was smaller it would be ok, as far as im concerned its still a living animal, small or big, so each time you go out for a feed, you kill and slaughter the fish you catch regardless of size and can justify it because they werent as big as this shark, to me thats just double standards but hey thats my opinion, he broke no laws, so dont nothing wrong in my books
mate ive eaten big bronzies to like 200kg and they dont taste much different to the smaller ones but thats over east as well, the worse thing is this guys coping it from peoples assumptions, everyone assuming the fish is wasted, what about the benefit of the doubt just the way ppl cope a bagging for keeping marlin, many people saying you cant eat the, they all taste nice and many times arent wasted
he was geared up for it, its like he new he was going to catch that massive shark i meen who would go down to the local jetty with that gear what else was he planning to catch
Good capture for sure....congrats. The fact that he said he'd kept the head as a trophy and no mention of fish flesh eaten disturbs me. If a shark was taken away from near by swimers i feel better about the take!
Looks like he was after sumthin big with that reel and rod!
Sure wasnt after any herring ha ha
I think the article said it was near a popular swimming area too, id be happy to see it dead!
I agree with fishy.... I think it's a pretty safe bet to assume that the shark will end up being thrown out... I think both guys (Bull and Bronze Shark fishermen) are tossers!!
Fishing is a form of hunting... All men have an inbuilt impulse to hunt... we have been designed to collect food through hunting... but as said the purpose is food...
People who catch and keep any fish (or hunt and kill any other animal for that matter) for any reason other than to eat (pests not included) have a dose of small man syndrome in my book
That's just my opinion lads... sorry if it hurts any small men out there...
(perhaps the 'pro' has other options set up - pet food etc...??)
(as far as sharks like that swimming near swimming beaches... and...??? are sharks human killing machines???
I'd be interested to know whether or not they were burleying up... attracting the sharks to these "public swimming areas"... look at cott... you're not allowed to do it there... I wonder why???)
I personally admire sharks, they are ultimate pedators and beautiful to watch in the ocean or aquarium. Sml sharks i have no prob wif but big ones scare the hell out of me.
I guess killing something that big for me would be out of fear but for others it may be a case of big noting themselves, i dont know.
I think also a lot of people are unaware of sharks and how they are percieved isnt all good and people dont like and are ignorant when they dont understand. If it was targeted too catch for food then ok but just to kill it for fun is wrong. JMO!
I think he would have said that the fish will be eaten to the reporter, but that detail was probably left out of the report for some reason.
Its not he like he catches them that size every time. That might be his biggest shark ever landed. Give him some credit he must have known what he was doing to land that beast!!
Targeting big sharks from jetties is a common and accepted practice in Victoria. Read any East coast magazine and they have articles about it all the time.
None of that fish would of been wasted. It would all been cleaned and processed, wrapped in batter and all eaten by the end of the week.
Just it would of all been sold old out of the local fish and chip shop thou.
Feel a bit sorry for it at the moment but I've had a few days where they've cleaned up every bottom fish/mackerel we've hooked and wished death would rain upon them all. But at the end of the day it's his fish, he's probably put in a lot of time and effort and wants to show it off (much like we do when we get a good fish and post it up) so good on 'im.

Been targeting sharks of jetties, beaches & groins for years up in the Territory, very common practice, always release the big ones but do enjoy a nice piece of flake.
Problem is, because it is so common, a lot of fish mongers hang out at the known spots & offer to buy catches, alot of young "TOSSERS" do sell, $80 p/kg if the fins are cut clean. Never agreed or practiced this myself....but it happens all to often.....
All you have to do is watch that customs show and see what the Indo's are doing to the sharks. Mind you, they could do with a bit of a cull around Exxy at the moment, they are insane in some spots.
Unfortunately, to many rotting carcasses are left with no fins or heads, agree very pointless & highly illegal, but the fines are nothing to compared to $ value of fresh fins, rumour was they fetched $300 kilo if green (ie curvature cut to miss the veins & ensure no blood gets into the cartilage) on the black market, great for shark fin soup & apparently the cartilage is the no1 releif for arthritis.
Seen many a blue between conservative fishos & the blatant slaughterers

Hi Ya,
Big KG's maybe?
I'm of two minds - the moral side says it should have been released, the pragmatic side says he as well within his rights. Foot in both camp I maybe?
