Making your own assist hooks for Samson Jigging ?

hey fellas, in conjucntion with my recent samson perth post

alot of fellow users on here have told me about making your own assist hooks which is easy and fun and you also known what the quality is.

Lucky Tim, referd to me this website http://www.sportfishermen.com/board/f172/gmans-intro-vertical-jigging-67557.html
and it is very helpfull and this is the picture he has referd me too look out which is very easy and clear to see

and then attact the loop to the siwvel like in this pic

now just wondering is this how everyone ties/makes there own assist hooks ?? it looks very simple and easy. is it the best and strongest way?

or is there other ways ?

thanks for all the help and every ones comments in conjunction to my other posts cheers

There are plenty of different techniques. Look at Kasey's thread (in the jigging forum).

Suggest lightly melting the end of your tag to create a 'bulb' just in case your knot slips.

He basically does this knot

Mon, 2010-08-09 22:19

He basically does this knot in reverse around the hook shank. So what you do, is go through the eye of the hook, do a half hitch in one direction, then do a half hitch in the opposite direction, then let it go around one more time on the inside. Hopefully that makes sense. Might be able to get a pic if needed.

Thats how i do up my assists for sambo jigging. I like using owner SJ41's. If you're not using a welded eye hook, just watch which way the line loops around the shank so its not rubbing in.

Also, when threading the hook, do it as in the last pic, not the step by step one.

I also like putting in a drop of superglue too. You dont need it for strength, but it helps keep it in place and stop it loosening when not under load. I also like using a small amount of heatshrink over the hook (but dont always bother)

I use 7/0's or even SJ38's

Tue, 2010-08-10 14:36

I use 7/0's or even SJ38's (as i only run about 10kg max drag, and even the 38s in large sizes are pretty strong). Annoyingly bluewater put up the price of 41s by a few dollars a pack but the 38s and 51s were unaffected. The 38's in larger sizes are still pretty strong though... (but also a slightly different curve, not that i think it matters much).
I sometimes use cutlass hooks (cant remember who makes them, decoy?). Varivas seriola arent bad either. You could also use big gorillas or hoodlums :p.

Ideally you'd go larger than 7/0, probably a 9/0 or bigger..... but I get more 7/0's in a pack, and they still hold the fish fine (but i'd suggest at least 9/0 for sambo jigging). Plus then I can use them for other jigging like out of season ambers/demersals/singles on lure/etc. I probably run 2-3 hook sizes than most people. E.g. I run 3/0's when demersal jigging. I've caught lots of stuff from this to this on 3/0's. (yes that first fish was hooked in the mouth) And of course, this. Might go to 5/0s now though, hmm.

people here in Sa say the smaller the better it will hold in the fishes mouth but you no more then them for sure

Tue, 2010-08-10 15:41

I personally use 7/0's, but I suspect most people would recommend 9/0's (including a lot of people who've done a lot more sambo seasons than me).

Not sure I know more than them (maybe on sambo jigging only :p). In general, for jigging I do prefer smaller to larger hooks, but larger hooks do have advantages. Particularily in terms of not fouling on the jig. So if you can, match jigs to the gap width of the hooks. (or larger gaps).

Ask Kasey what he prefers (or Honsu, or a bunch others) as they'll probably be able to give you a better recomendation. Just cause its what I like doing certainly doesnt mean i'm an expert at it, or am necessarily doing it best :p
(Works for me though, so i'm happy)

Anyone tried using the YGK

Mon, 2010-08-09 22:24

Anyone tried using the YGK Zylon gear for making assist hooks?

Would you use the same knots or does the material require you to use something different?  I'm guessing it's significantly stiffer than kevlar.

 G'day Ben, Zylon does come

Wed, 2011-07-27 16:06

 G'day Ben,

Zylon does come with hollow core which you can splice and solid core which you need to tie knots. The ones I have so far are hollow core. Essentially I just tie the knot with core fibre in it just the way I use Kevlar & Dyneema assist cords.

Yeah, they are stiffer and harder to tie. Need a fair bit of superglue as well....

This knot lasted 2 samsons before the shark severed the leader and took the rest as souvenior...

stiff cord

Sun, 2011-07-31 00:05

i am using the stiff type cord as well...i think is a must to use the super glue...for the hollow core...if you know how...u can actually add in the wire inside the hollow to avoid bust off when hooked on toothy creatures like spanish mackerel which can easily severe the assist cord...over the few years...this method actually help me land more catch and minimize burst off...still prefer the softer type cord actually...easy to handle...

My only comment would be to put the loop of kevlar through the hook of the eye the other way around. That is, in step 5, put the kevlar through from the 'back' and out the'front' (point side).

What this does is it points the hook upwards, instead of downwards as in step 7. As such, when there is pressure on the shank of the hook, it will 'lock' instead of wanting to angle open.

7/0 is fine but may bit a bit small if the jig is fat (compare the thickness of the jig to the gape of the hook). 9/0 is the most commonly used size.

11/0 or 13/0 is not necessary because the mouths on samsonfish are relatively soft, small and easy to hook-up to.

Tue, 2010-08-10 17:35

Hey mate,

I am on the East Coast (syd) but have been going to Perth the past two seasons.

As for tying

Owner SJ41s are fine i use them and make my own assist hook with them, there really isn't a best hook , I have tried the JM hooks which i quite like as well, i suppose just get what is available to you, also 9/0 is what i use as well. Tha is how i tie my assist above in the photos you posted except feeding the cord the other way through the eye, it has not failed yet.

Hope you get some good weather for when you rock up, it is a sketchy time of the year as last year out of 6 days i was only able to get out twice.

My experience with them so far is that they are shiny and not enough come in a packet. I picked them up in a mixed lot of gear. They're obviously very tough, but you don't need a hook with such a broad gape unless you're fishing very big, slow jigs and most people speed jig for sambos.

I still prefer the owner SJ-41's over the fisherman hooks.

All hooks will open but in my experience these open more frequently than the others.

so really what is the difference in the Owner SJ41's and the 51s

i see the 51 9/0s are 290lb test

and the 41 9/0s are 240lb

so the 51's are 50lb  and i gess thats where the extra in the price is as i cant see any more differeces really.

if they are both the same size i would go for the 51s with that extra lb

51's have thicker gauge

Wed, 2010-08-11 14:21

51's have thicker gauge wire, and are more expensive per hook. Getting the biggest/thickest possible isnt always the best as the thicker the hook, the less hooksetting ability (well, more force required to hookset). I have some 11/0 51's and they are stupidly thick (shoulda got the 41's)

For the record, even the 3/0's 41's take 30kg+ to bend. Though you also have the fishes mouth strength as well as the drag pressure, but sambos will still be fine on 41's.

The gauge of the wire on the SJ-51 is alot thicker and stronger than the SJ-41

The SJ-51 also has the cutting point.

Just go the SJ-41 these are strong enough for jigging samson SJ-51's are not needed

Actually I think the really big Fishermans are made by Owner.

Anyone have a code or description for the Owner swivel with a fixed ring?

I know Valley Hill make one too, but they're very hard to pin down.
