Kimberley - travelling light best five lures

Hey guys - am about to embark on a trip around the Kimberleys in a boat but am limited (greatly) to the weight of baggage to a measily 10kg ............there is reasonable gear on the boat but what are the FIVE (or six or seven 'cos they are light) best lures you would carry with you to target barra and jacks in some of the remote creeks around the archipeligo.

Preferably hard bodies as soft plastics require the lead heads which quickly add up weight wise

Any help would be much appreciated

If you only brought a fly

Tue, 2010-08-10 16:58

If you only brought a fly rod, not only would your rod and reel be lighter than a spin outfit, you could take literally hundreds of flies Laughing

Worth taking a twisty? Not for the jacks/barra, but perhaps in some other situations?

Fly rod = p@#fter

HALCOS in various depts around the 90-115mm mark, nilsmaster spearheads anything gold in colour and chuck enough lead heads to make up the weight. that should see you through

its funny how the more technical style of fishing cops the flack!! anyone can cast a spinning reel!!! not saying its the better option but if you like the wand youre no better or worse than any other angler. all trying to achieve the same thing just with different tools.

The only person qualified for a wand is a wizard. So if you do decide to go with the fly, make sure you pick up an oversized cloak and/or hat.

Yes, the ability to make fish appear when they arent hitting other stuff, haha.

Hey, I never said it was a good idea or a practical idea for sunshine, but from a weight point of view, you'd be way out in front with a flyrod Wink

First things first.

What time of year are you going. It effects what size etc if you are that tight for choice.

As for Fly, it is an art which some will never master or understand. The greatest skill in angling is that of the dry fly. To create an artificial and temp the most timid of fish is beyond most. (can of worms now open)

This time in two weeks I will be afloat

Tue, 2010-08-10 18:58

It's the last trip of the season, left it as late as possible but no choice and I know it has been cooler than usual up there which might limit the opportunities

Can you get Reidy's in Perth ??  Or do I need George to express some down from the Territory ?

I figured gold as on the Ord the gold lures were by far and away the most consistent

And what is a fizzer - thought that was what my wife drinks out of expensive bottles

Never heard of Gaden either so perhaps that shows how little a lure fisherman I am (unless it is redfin out of a yak on sp''s  - roll on the warmer weather)

A fizzer is a surface bait

Tue, 2010-08-10 19:45

A fizzer is a surface bait that has one to two propellers. Used with short sharp jerks. Crocs are quite attracted to them. As for gold on "The Ord" yes and no. I used gold on lower clarity days and naturals on clear days. As it is the end of the dry it will be clearer than not. I would suggest using smaller profiles if you want to catch numbers of fish as they generally take smaller bait etc in colder months.  Get a surface lure such as a Skitter pop/ Tango dancer. A shallow diver possibly a Skin Deep or Cultiva Savoy Shad then a Med diver Halco Scorp. A deep diver like a poltergeist will walk through snags with ease and has a great action (I have caught dozens of metre plus barra on these). Finally A Crazy Deep, the name says it all. There are hundreds of Barra lures to choose from and most work. I hope this helps.

Fizzers - Surface lures and cool for the visual strike

Rob Gadens - 3ft and 10ft.  I'm no barra expert (well, wild ones anyway ;) ) but have seen these in action and they work a treat.

Wed, 2010-08-11 09:11

The lure that we had the most unreal luck on up north was the halco 190 crazy deep Fusilier.

We were trolling 3 lures and that one got belted every time.
We were all gutted when a mack took it then a big shark took the mack with the lure. R.I.P Fusilier.

Thanks - so much for five (got ten)

Fri, 2010-08-13 11:32

Took all of the suggestions and went overboard and bought ten (well I can justify that as they don't weigh much do they) - will provide a trip report when we return from the trip - it's more cruising, sightseeing and crabbing with fishing on the side but those Kimberley creeks look so inviting

Next year -  to Alaska - is the fishing trip but the wild Kimberley beckons like a magnet in this cool weather - that will be two off the bucket list while health and finances permit such indulgencies
