Hopefully they’re sitting on a beach somewhere waiting to be picked up. AMSA aircraft is pretty well overhead Carnarvon now you can watch their track on Flightradar24 .
definately not good. hope they are found safe. im glad im not the only one workinig today! the joys of workiing for yourself you get to work every day!
Heard the mayday thismorning at about 6am on vhf. Cant believe they were out yesterday afternoon. Mayday by vmr said they had no safety gear whatsoever. Conditions were awful.
Our thoughts and prayers are with these two brothers, hopefully they are found safe and sound! Can't imagine what their family is going through at the moment, hopefully they stay strong.
As travelling to Norwegian bay inside the reef--which would be the only logical way to get there from Lefroy in a 3 metre inflatable. It's not very far, the beach is all fully accessible by quad bike, so unlikely they are on the beach anywhere there. My greatest fear would be that they had a failure of some type and were swept out across the reef by the winds--likely fresh SE/SSE last night? Reported as having absolutely no safety gear, might that include an anchor? Swell still up as it is here? Not looking good, thoughts with family.
I surfed yardie yesterday arvo it was putrid when I came in around 3 pm. It was more southerly than sw at least 25 knots with gusts. The swell wasnt huge but every hour or so a big set would clean up the lineup. Not good boating conditions. Got pretty wet coming in in the tinny.
They are sooooo lucky. I was thinking if they ended up behind the reef they could end up anywhere depending on the current. I always take my full safety gear out in the tinny. Ive rowed in before which is not fun. There are lots of guys in exmouth who surf and fish yardie way out of tiny tinnys no jackets no safety gear no oars no boat rego.
Just curious to know who’s going to foot the bill for Bristows Chopper and AMSA’s Global challenger ? . Add in six vmr boats and 12 recreation vessels not a cheap exercise for anyone. I’m pretty sure this is a good lesson for all boaties ANYWHERE to have the appropriate gear on board . Bottom line is that they’re safe and sound .
I looked at their approximate position of rescue, and where they likely drifted from, only drifted maybe a bit over 20 nm. Just an anchor and 10 metres of rope ( and the sense to deploy it before they got out to the break ) and it would have meant they'd have been found much earlier and safer. Anyway, good outcome. I was hoping they'd be picked up, and thought it was more likely they'd be up towards the rigs. Miust have been a strong tide from the north to slow them down.
Awesome news that the boys have been found, their family must be completely exhausted; not to mention the great work of all the emergency crew and volunteers, these guys do a fantastic job when something like this happens and I don’t believe they get enough recognition of the great work they do!! Well done to all the crews on boats and in the air that made this rescue happen!!!!
The fact they were not carrying any safety gear they should be made to pay the cost of the search especially in a remote area.
I am currently part of a review of safety geat with the Department of Transport and one of the recommendations is for all vessels that go more than 400 mtrs offshore carry an EPIRB or PLB reduced from 2nm. unfortunately we still need the politicians to approve it and other recommendations that will out for public comment in a few months.
This is a classic example of when this would have saved them and the tax payer a large bill for the sake of a couple of hundred dollars, but unfortunately you can't force them to carry one and you can't legislate for stupidity.
I disagree most strongly. There will always be stupid, unlucky, incompetent and/or "simple minded" people in our world.
Absolutely the last thing should be a parent delaying raising the alarm because they may lose their house if it turns out they or someone they are responsible for made an error of judgement or incompetence.
I understand you and the rest of our emergency services must deal with this regularly, but that is just a fact of life.
It is not part of our society nor aloowed under our International obligations to charge people for this UNLESS there is criminal intent such as a hoax.
Your epirb proposal is a good one but there are of course complications such as surfers, windsurfers, kiters, tenders
I think the parents have a lot to answer for though.
Even though an 18 yr old is an adult. And it is pretty sheltered there it easy to be complacent.....Wouldn't you atleast just do a quick check to see if they atleast had enough fuel And some basic safety gear. Before letting them Choof of at 4pm in the arvo
They should be getting ( in my opinion ) pinged for not having any safety gear on board . They must’ve had next to no juice on board as well . Shameful ! . They’re lucky to be alive .
Making people carry expensive epirbs in what could be a small dinghy is just ludicrous and nanny state. More than 400 metres offshore? Lets get a bit of rationality back here--one very cheap and simple thing that could have kept them in the area where they went missing would have been $40 worth of cheap anchor and rope. Period. And that is already covered, they just chose to ignore it. Like they would have ignored a requirement to carry an EPIRB. Even though the 18 yo was referred to as a man( legally speaking), it is still down to the parents, owners, no doubt, of the boat.
Flares and some basic tools in a piece of 100m sewer pipe with a cap glued on one end, screwcap on the other end, anchor and some rope, oars, and an icecream contaner as a bailer. Add lifejackets, inflatable and always worn, and you have a very good set of safety gear for a dinghy. All that is needed. Oh, and I forgot, the intelligence to use them in an appropriate matter. You can't legislate that, and that often seems to be what is missing.
We don't need any more restrictive legislation on this--are you trying to kill boating off altogether? We are already one of the most highly regulated countries in the world. So much of Risk Management is about the people at the top feeling the need to be seen to do something after an incident, rather than a rational, considered, response. if this requirement comes out for public comment, we must resist it in the strongest possible terms.

The bill is always paid by the taxpayer, always has and always will and always should be unless there is criminal intent.
It is the most basic rule of seamanship and on land also.
Its just bad luck for us that we have just about the biggest maritime zone in the world.
