So this was all we got back of this monster mako. Unfortunately we didn't see what ate it but must of been impressive!! The head was about 100kg. It was a crazy morning of shark fishing. Hoping to catch smaller sharks but just hooked big sharks that got eaten by bigger sharks again. When I thought I’d seen it all, we cut about 35kg of meat off the mako head and discovered it had a marlin bill embedded in its head.. will upload the video soon. Has to been seen !!!! Its been in it for years.. amazing healing powers of the shark in one video!!!!!!
Seen plenty of photos using photographic “objective / subjective “ focussing.....just how far behind the head is the guy, a fair way as you cannot see his feet beneath the carcass.....would be interested in other peoples thoughts
There used to be a huge fibreglass mould of a mako head in the pub in Carnarvon and even after longlining for many years it was bigger than anything we had hooked.
Later though we caught 2 very big ones about 15 miles off 80 mile beach in 20 meters of water of all places.
Swordy bills-the way they get speared is when they attack swordies hooked on a longline.
The swordy can only swim in a 30 meter circle as its hooked and straight into the shark attacking it.
Swordies dont attack like a spear, its a flat blade they swing side to side to stun their prey such as squid and is why, when longlining, its very common to not hook them but lasso around the bill instead.
Many times we found oceanic blue sharks with snapped off bills in them
When we got makos nearly all of them had tuna circles in their gobs, fisheries wanted us to log them as part of their research.
I've got a couple of pics of what was left of a mako that was chewed up by small thickies off Hamelin Bay that was caught when we were allowed to hang hooks off float on the net. Had a complete spine with tail, dorsal, pecs and head all that was left
Like all the fish pics on this site and others that show all these fishermen with enormous hands or is that just a fisherman thing, do we all have enormous hands but, still a fair sized mako. The shark/sharks that ate it wouldn't have to be much bigger, easy target once they are hooked. I reckon yer average 5m GW would be into that, or even a big tiger. Although Bermagui is probably getting a little far south for tigers?
Speaking of tigers, we were fruitlessly trolling a couple of days ago well north of Kalbarri, and decided to come inside a bit. Went over the top of tthe 10 fathom ridge, and had a strike on a deep diver. Dead weight, no fight, thought I had a big lump of weed. Start retrieving, and see a big shape coming. Just swimming in with me, a fair-sized tiger. he probably heard me coming, followed looking for a feed, snapped up the lure, and just kept following. He came right up to the boat, gave us a good look, then realised he was hooked, and bolted, with the inevitable result. It was almost funny, although it cost me a lure.
seen similar years ago, approx 3.5m white half-drown but still kicking caught in a commercial net off windy harbour, boys couldn’t cut it out
to pull the net so went back in to get more gear when they returned found just the head remaining in the net...everyone assumed a killer whale but nobody really knew. Museum took a cast of the head and bite marks but I never heard what they found out. I saw the head on the beach that arvo...massive!

Looks altered
I agree. I’d say it looks altered somehow, or a bit of tricky photography.

Guess
At a guess I'd say about 3.5 metres, appears bigger than it really is by him standing back but still a good fish

Yes, a fair bit of perspective distortion there.

What ever it was that took to the mako
Was one hell of a size and certainty something I would not like to encounter in my little tube that’s for sure
