Hmmm Perth it is

Hey lads,

Perth it is  after securing a job in April, what should I expect fishing wise after a 3 year working holiday in Darwin and 30 odd years of fishing in Vic and NSW??? I'll be based around Spearwood and have previoulsy fished out of anything that floats or any piece of land near the water

Look forward to catching up with a few of you to give me the good oil on the fishing scene over there. I had a bit of a look at the new regulations in WA and I must say I was shocked at the new limits? I guess there all right if you catch a reasonable amount of fish to feed your family most trips, but i wonder if this the case? As we all know fish feed at certain times and every second trip can be fruitless?

What is the blue water scene like in particular kingfish and bluefin, I'm guessing a minimum 6m boat is required to reach the grounds. Land based I'm guessing is off and on like most places, and boat fishing much the same???

Anyways look forward to getting over there and doing a bit of blue water, bay, kayak, jetski and landbased fishing and hearing the waves pound on the shore again.

Very sorry to say, but kingfish here are a very rare and unsual pleasure, worse, its very hard getting bluefin over 10kg.

This year we have had a good

This year we have had a good run of smaller tuna (Yellowfin, Bluefin and Stripeys) as well as Marlin and Spanish Mackeral. However, these are seasonal(Mid-Late Summer, Early Autumn). Kingies are around but definately not in big numbers, allthough they are usually good sized fish if you can find them.

Bottom fish are the most common target here i.e Dhufish, Snapper, Baldies etc. A 6m boat would be plenty big enough for most fishing around Perth. But don't get used to the pelagics!

For True pelagic action yr round you have to head up to warmer waters. But still nice fishing around Perth.

Ahh ok a 10kg bluefin isnt

Ahh ok a 10kg bluefin isnt that big at all, but big enough for a good feed, approximatelly how far out does one need to travel to get amongst them 20kms? I think i read an article claiming the grounds were 15kms out of Rottnest? No albacore amongst the bluefin??? I'm guessing you'd have to travel further south to be amongst more thicker tuna?

Its a bit of a shame that Kingies aren't found in reasonable numbers over there, what are the alternative species that frequents the grounds they like to hang around and how do they taste in comparisson. I read somewhere that amberjack and samson fish are there poorer cousins but dont cook up as well due to a particular condition that renders there flesh mushi at times?

Re snapper how successful are your trip in terms of catches, for those who know how to fish for them? How about sharking gummies, mako and thresher?

Many thanks in advance,

Old Salt

be in for a shock if you expect that variety off Perth.

Few bluefin here and smaller sizes, no Albacore. Few Kingies, alternatives being Samson fish and a few small Amberjacks. Pink Snapper are around, we have closed seasons, no take zones and they get hit pretty hard in season. Sharks are on the improve but finding Gummies/Makos/Threshers can be hard, there are plenty of Bronzies and other Whaler species around though.

Not all bad though, we have a few different species here. Most notable being the WA Dhufish, basically a Pearl Perch on steriods. Other prized species inc. Baldchin Groper, Nannygai, Harlequin Fish. You can fish deep <200m for Grey Banded Cod, Harpuku, Bass Groper and Blue Eye Trevalla. Further north giving more variety again.

This year is an extreme exception when it comes to pelagic activity. There are usually a few Spaniards and Mahi Mahi around in late Summer/ Autumn but nothing like this year.

the minimum size boat

the minimum size boat for perth would be a quality 5m boat and most of the time you only need to go 10-20kms offshore to get a feed. sambos would have to be the alternate to kingies but lack in the eating quality. tuna have basically been everywhere in the past couple of months. if your looking to holiday up north a good 5-6 metre boat will be towable up there and could get you into some quality catches.

fella you are more than capable off any perth metro boat ramp to catch all species above in a 14 footer, eception only matt millers end post, above and beyond the 120m mark which still is 80m deeper than i ever fish, there is plenty here to catch within 2-6 mile off the coast all those "big" boats drive straight over
