Hillarys Landbased report... !MUST READ!

OK today i set out to Hillarys Platform at 12:30...

i caught one snook at 33cm, ideal bait for mullaway. but using it for rays.

Leemo (liam) came a bit later at about 2pm and we set up the big rods.

with no success we were getting doubtful wen my rod get a take at at about 3:30 but did not hookup. i was reeling in and checked my bait out, A HUGE BITE right in the middle of the snook. Liam and i were seeing what the chances could be but we didnt get our hopes up at all.

so 5 minutes after i cast again. this time mucking it up as it whent about 15m out and ended in a HUGE over-wind. so there was me undoing a huge over-wind and about 5mins later success no more over-wind so as i was reeling in slack and rig i felt the rig moving... i was like WTF? is this the current or is it a fish? then i knew what it was as there was about a 5sec run. Gimbal belt was on and i was PUMPED.

We were all trying to suss out what type of fish it was??? as it had head-shakes but rarely so we called it a ray but then another head shake so we called it a snapper or Sandbar whaler shark. but then i noticed it kept going left and right along the rocks and then i called it as a mulluway. about 20mins into the fight, it broke the surface and we all stared and stared...... it was a MULLA!   5 minutes after Liam gaffed it and we all yelled our heads off in triumph!

Pulling the mulla onto the platform form the rocks was hard!

but once on the platform it was huge! i was in agony!!!! MY WHOLE BODY HURT!

after photos etc. we measured it at 123cm and estimated between 18-19 KGs!!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thing is it was my first Mullaway and it was the first fish on the new O/H setup

WHAT A WAY TO CHRISTEN IT!

......................................................................................................

I called it a day after that and kindly gave the fish to Liam as i do not eat fish, i catch and release.

Thanks you Liam for assisting me throughout the whole fight!!!

Thank you brody for the Rig Advice!!!

Thank you Colin for telling me the ideal Mulla bait!!!

mulloway that size don't come along all that often, especially during the day from somewhere like Hillary's so it's a great capture. Must be stoked, good to see Brody's rig came through with the goods.

Nice way to open the account! That one looks like he's only just come out of the rive too.

Just a little formula for you:
Weight to length equation for Mulloway - Weight (grams) = 0.011355 x Length (cm) to the power of 2.94

Been pretty handy formula.

Cleaning of the fish

Tue, 2010-06-22 09:37

great catch from Hillarys. Have not heard of too many mullas coming from that platform.

Did you clean the fish on the platform. I went down this morning to have a look and the platform was covered in large scales. If you did clean it there please ensure you clean up after for futures fishers. Did not look good.

There were a couple fishing and they had 5 rod out between them. Not sure if that is legal?????

Thu, 2010-07-01 20:13

Congrats on a top fish, always gives you a buzz when you first get a look at it in the water.

Tip, if you are going to fillet a fish that size it pays not to scale it.Leaving the scales on strengthens the skin making it easier to slice the skin off. But if its going to be cut into cutlets by all means get them off.

Wed, 2010-06-30 21:54

Spend the time releasing the fish and they will swim off and survive  ........  my mates studied marine biology and i helped them out for years doing there tagging program.

Got all the information back on  recaptures for all the fish we tagged and there were hundreds of mulla's  that made it to fight another day !

Big mulla - 40kg plus can be difficult to revive , depending on the tackle used and fight duration - they often have a heart attack due to stress . most fish up to 30kg normally survive the release ....... these results are based on land based captures .

Thu, 2010-07-01 17:55

He's done well the lad. First ever big fish and he kept it, so what. It didn't get wasted or fed to the dogs so its all good I reckon.

IMO plenty of fisherman have kept their first big fish, and rightly so. That what's rules and regulations are for, and Diehard didn't break any.

A lot of blokes talk the talk on this site, but I doubt they've always walked the walk themselves.;)

I think the releasing well thing is up for debate to Brenz.

Shorebased probably ok but a lot of those mulloway caught and and released in blackwall reach and mossies often seem to swim off ok but then sink and die and end up being washed ashore downriver.

Pumped

Thu, 2010-07-01 19:03

The kids pumped and rightly so. I just get the shits when people try to rain on people's first ever parade, especially when they've put in a lot of effort to have one.

Lots of crew have congratulated him, but some have dropped in comments that aren't warranted in a MUST READ thread. :)

But hey, that's JMO, and who's to say its the right one anyway.

Cheers, John

A great first big fish for a keen young angler.

Yep, I'm with you on this one as well BJ.  If you wanted to debate the merits of mulloway release, start your own thread.  Then again, the result of doing so on someone elses to steal their limelight just makes you look like the tool to the wider community - so it sort of balances out in the long run.

Im a c&r fisherman and keep

Im a c&r fisherman and keep the occasional fish , not related to this thread but i think that aslong as its legal then i personally see no reason for anyone to say anything. The only people to get upset about is fisherys who make the law.
