When i want to catch herring i got to either North or South Mole in Fremantle. I use small (stress - SMALL) pieces of coral prawn on a very small hoos (size 8).
I normally catch about 10-20 in a night, and a get there at about 5pm. You can get there earlier and you will also catch garfish.
I make the rig by putting a white size #2 or #3 plastic float running to a swivel. I then have a leader of about 60-70cm and have 2 hooks at the bottom.
I find that they hook themselves, and I just try to keep the line as tight as possible.
There may be better ways, but i find that this works for me.
you can find herring almost anywhere along the coast, but you will find more along sea walls and groins or jetties. the best bait i have found would be prawns or maggots, however you can also get them on small lures
hey mate..i was on here a few months ago looking for the same help.got reel good feed back from here....
when i have been fishing for them i use either small blue bait(works for tailor too!),prawns,or even fresh herring i just caught...they seem to love small bits of herring...if they are around your area you should catch them..just all luck..but do try to berley for them..tends to bring them in droves...
having said that where i was this morning i thought it was perfect for fishing..east breeze high tide coming in...only caught two!...just bad luck or was the swell to much guys?..it was nearly over 2.5ms at times...seemed to be a bit murky water and lots of seaweed around..i caught 1 small fish..it was pink in colour and a nice looking fish..by looking at my book it looked like a small red emperor..could this be the case?
anyone have any ideas how two rocks is for fishing for tailor and herring lately?
I find at night, mainline to small swivel to about 60cm of 30lb trace not even to a size 8 hook. try find the ones that have seraded edges on the back. put a glow stick just before the hook and use a bit of river prawn. if there biting they will take anything!
this might be hard to cast with, but its best (IMO) as it hits the water, itl sinker deeper/quicker and result in easier/quicker/more hook ups.
has anyone some good spots for overnight fishing on weds night?..from the rocks or jetty..has woodman point a jetty?..or peron point maybe.heard they are pretty good..

Burley is key
It definately gets tha herring fired up. Then they seem to go after any bait around.
Then again I have been skunked more times then I have caught fish in my short fishing career.

I would say that pink fish you caught was a baby pink snapper. They are pink with pretty blue spots on the top.
