Looking for some advice/opinions
I'm looking for a weapon....
No popguns or pea shooters.....
I'm not going back into the warzone without heavy artillary....
I need a serious, standup outfit that will eat the opposition for breakfast....
Trolling and live baiting, that's it...
37kg class tested to the limit....
my initial thoughts are - Shimano Tiagra 50 WLRSA
but.....is it E N O U G H !!!!!!!!

Hmmm well I think the tiagra 50 has around 18 kilos max drag... plenty of line capacity.. what will you be targetting? Probably not ideal for stopping brutes burying you in the reef but if it's fish that tend to stay on the surface (sailfish, marlin, spaniards, wahoo) it would be fine I reckon.
What were you using in place of this combo on your last trip?

weapon
I will use it for anything that will eat a lure or live bait. I was using TLD 30 2 sp, torium 30, okuma tg 15S, TSS4 Speedmaster, Penn 950SS. These were fine for average fish upto 20-30kg.....but when the trophy fish hit....it really showed how inadequate this gear was.....Big marlin are on the cards at anytime, as are dogtooth and yellowfin to 100kg.....so something like a stella or saltiga just does not have the line capacity and is not as suited to longer, drawn our battles with a harness. I was also thinking of the Penn International 70VS....

Heavy stand-up outfit
Jeeez, you could get a book written on this subject.
I use a Tiagra50W, (no LRS or add ons) and it can do over 22kgs of drag no sweat.
I run 800metres of 130lb Izorline on it with a 100metres of 80lb Suffix mono top shot.
This is on a Shakespeare White Tiger 50/100 stand-up blank (at $30US cheap as dirt and unbreakable) made up with an AFTCO UB2 short curved butt and the AFTCO wind-on rollers.
This rig is sheer murder on a fish and gives the guy loading it some too........a real stump puller.
I wouldn´t swop it for anything. (Tho I rekon I´ve got a spare blank around somewhere).

Shakespeare White Tiger 50/100 stand-up blank
Hi Mick
Would love to build up one of those blanks. Where would be the best place to buy one from if they are still available.
Thanks

heavy standup
seansurfy - i'll check the drag on my penn 50tw to see what she bottoms out at for ya tommorow. but ive never had anytrouble slowing down super sized sharks (500kg+) and tuna over 80kg with it.i run 900m of 50lb mono with a standard 150lb wind on leader. if thats not enough line for ya then you need a faster boat to chase after em.

Hi Shaun. The Shimano 50wlrs is going to be perfect for Marlin up to 1000lbs. I would combine it with a Shimano T-Curve 37kg rod. You may need to allow 4-5 hours to land a grander but dammit, its a sport so you dont need to have the fish on the boat sooner than that - do you?

This pic is of an 80kg Yellowfin Tuna caught on a Richter Lure and landed in just over 40 minutes http://fishwrecked.com/comment/reply/4402 using the outfit described above.

Sold
That's what I'm talkin about....nice tuna!!!!I checked out the T-curve yesterday, and it looks good, bit of a broomstick though. There was also a couple of 37kg Live Fibre stand up sticks which were nicer...but twice the price.
Do you run straight mono or use a top shot over superline on the 50WLRSA?
Now....I wonder if my wife will notice the giant gold reel and broomstick rod under the Xmas tree with my name on it......mmmm

Penn International
I have a Penn International 80 WIDE Single Speed Lever Drag Game Reel, Ive been considering selling it for a while now (well the wife has been) as it wont get used again, and could buy a sh!t load of soft plastics! (and nappies)
I brought it in Qld around 1985
Fully blue printed including rotary tuned twin drag system
Has the jumping Marlin on the side plate with wooden handle...
Just been cleaned to sell :(
Can give you the serial number to check history with J Eskine (the man)
I had it mounted on a old mustard Butterworth JS980...
will need respooling as the 37kg Platypus on there would be orginal
Would consider offers over $1200.00 and I would throw the butter stik in for free (the balancing was worth $500 18 years ago) Have the box but no manually...oh I think there is receipts for the customising etc.....
This old school grander gear.....in mickey mouse condition....fish or display

T-Curve
A nice stick. You say its a broomstick but it will bend like hell with a decent fish on the end of the line. We fill the Tiagra with good quality 37kg line, start to finish with a wind on leader on the end.(150kg to 500kg leader)
