Hand held GPS
Submitted by crabking on Sun, 2010-03-28 00:09
Hi - have been reading forums for a while - and now I have a question for the masses of people who have been doing this a lot longer than I have - Does anyone use hand held gps (garmin etrex or similar) on a boat - are they reliable - and any reccomendations? - I dont have a lot of room on the boat and only go out as far as I can still see land - thanks

do you have an iphone?
if so you can download a navionics gps onto the phone that has every chart in australia for $15 i have been using it and its great. it is a little fiddly being that its a phone and not bolted to your dash but if your after a hand held 1 thats what you get anyway
just another cheap option

Go Garmin...
The Garmin GPSMAP60 or GPSMAP76 would be the best choice...
The cheapest in perth for a GPSMAP60 is around $300 from:
http://www.prestigecom.net.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1487
You'll be payin between $400 & $500 for the Cx & Csx models but i recon the b&w model with internal memory does the job.
I can also sort you out with cheaper than cheap charts... but you'll have to PM me.

Hey Rig - so do you reckon
Hey Rig - so do you reckon the iPhone GPS + charts are pretty accurate?? I've been wondering about that lately...seems on the streets it is a little clunky...not super accurate, or it doesn't update quickly enough...But that might be the way I have been using it, i.e. indoors or under cover (GPS best works with an open view of the sky)

had a H2O lowrance
nice unit runs off a ciggy lighter plug or batteries. Doest read navionics gold cards Aust wide map though. too much info for it. Does read smaller cards. Teamed up with a ram mount is super for the tinny. Had Garmin and had dramas with the power cord coroding and the mounts failing. Ended up taping it on at 1 stage..
