Fuel tank filler location
Submitted by bradz on Mon, 2019-04-15 08:56
Hi guys
Im nearing the completion of my boat rebuild but have some small issues to resolve. The first being the placement of the fuel filler.
Normally the fuel filler for an under floor tank is fitted either on the transom or above the gunnels. I understand this avoids fuel spills inside the boat. However, do you think there would be a problem with filling the tank directly via a filler in the top of the tank?
All comments are welcome.

I have read some reports of servos not allowing people to refuel while in the boat. The other thing that annoys me is dragging black fuel hoses across the gunnels
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Biggest prob there is having to get on the boat to do it. Also got to consider a chance of water seeping in through the cap if its at floor level. Then you got the breather issue

My Bar Crusher has the filler ontop the tank, Between the seats but just forward....... I think its a great idea personally.... Never is there an issue of water ingress i fuel from gerrys at sea when on long trips.
Never Had a drama filling up at any servo throughout WA, NT, QLD. Filled tanks, Filled Gerry cans in boat never been an issue ever.
As for getting in the boat to fill same again not an issue, Pull up step up the ladder grab the fuel hose and fill.
It works for me and your always gunna get haters mostly one's that dont have it or dont like new ideas just my opinion.

Dept of transport info sheet
Dept of transport info sheet on tank construction states that there's no possibillity of fuel spillage or overflow from the tank into below deck spaces.

Have been trying to hunt it
Have been trying to hunt it down online but looks like the marine gov site has gone. I've only got a hard copy here, it's only 4 pages.

Tank being level
The only problem I can think of is if the boat is not level it may result in not being able to fill completely or eve having have fuel slop out of the top.

Most boarts are set up on an angle on the trailer , so you're probably only going to get 90% ish full.

Have both - gunnel and tank
Have both - gunnel and tank fill cap - main reason is there is no better or more reliable fuel gauge than a notched piece of dowel accessed through the tank fill cap...

the filler is normally
outside so you don't get a build up of fuel vapor inside the boat while filling .

Got it
You have got it spot on, the gas coming off the fuel is heavier than air and will settle in the bottom of the boat that is the reason why they insist on the filler cap on the outside of the gunnel

Mine is located in the outboard well, forward of the transom. Works for me, but does mean the boat has to be quite far forward at the bowser for the hose to reach, which is sometimes a pain in smaller petrol stations.
What not to do: Some genious decided to route the filler hose right through one of my under floor kill tanks which sits behind the fuel tank. Don’t do this. The tank has a constant fuel odour and means the kill tank is useless.

Filler in the floor...
I'm a bra-crusher person too.
I use a siphon to fill up from plastic jerry-cans. THen whatever is left gets poured in with a funnel.
Very easy and no mess.
I measured the depth of my tank at 200mm... then removed the fuel sensor and discovered it was 175mm. No wonder the gauge was useless.
I obtained a 200mm sensor and integrated it in to my Lowrance & Simrad instruments. Its fairly easy to level the boat on the trailer before filling and 20 litres = 20% on the fuel gauge
