Bet there's going to be a few
Bet there's going to be a few of them sold now.
Though, remember when diving not to cut in front of your dive buddy giving him a big boot, then a metallic taste and sore teeth for the rest of the dive...

Yes you do
I've had a zap or two in the head when doing a backward roll entry and also in the goolies
(yes through the wet suit) when lying on it after crays, but apart from that you dont realy notice it's there having said that it's only a bit of discomfort it dosent realy hurt

Did a little experiment when
Did a little experiment when up at the Montes on a dive charter last year. We anchored up for the night and i thought i would throw some berley out to see if i could get any fish to come around. NOPE only managed to get a heap of Whalers and Black Tip Reef Sharks of all different kinds with the big ones easily getting to 3m. Got them into a massive feeding frenzy at the back of the boat with some old fish frames tied to a rope. Then lowered my Freedom 7 in on a rope turned on. It was amazing ALL the Whalers/Reef Sharks zoomed off in a flash. And none returned for the 5 minutes i had it still in the water turned on. When i pulled it out they gradually returned to munch the fish carcasses haning off the back of the boat.
I also tried my Freedom 7 on a White Tip Reef Shark when at the Rowley Shoals. Went right up to it then turned it on. He didnt even budge. But in another instance there we had a Long Nose Grey hanging around us a bit to close for my liking, turned the Sahrk Sheild on and POW! he bugger off. So far i have found them not to work on White Tips, Wobbies, Port Jackson, basically all your slower moving bottom sharks. It seems that there isnt any general rule with these Shark Shields, what someone says may have worked for them may not have worked for others. I myself have personally seen them work on small and big sharks, on sharks cruising and in feeding frenzy. But on the same token i have also seen them not work in some of the same cases. I have to wear one for my work whn i am up there, but i guess even if they only work in 50% of situations, thats better than not having one at all.
And for the myth that they can actually attract sharks, i have no idea. All i know is that i havent had a shark come up on me out of nowhere when i have had it on, more they were already there when i jumped in but they didnt leave when i turned it on, or i had it turned off then they have turned up, then i turn it on and they either zoom off quickly or just hang around at a distance.
Oh yeah and they do zap, not to bad, but will go through wet suit. Have accidently knelt on mine a couple of times when sitting on the bottom. Also they can shock through ally as i found out when i put my leg over the side of an ally duck tinnie with the cord between my legs and the tail still in the water. Now that DID hurt. Even shocked the poor deckie when she grabbed my shoulder not knowing what was going on except my yelling. Have to be wet with saltwater though. They wont work in Freshwater or in a pool, even if its a salt water pool(not salty enough??)

have used them for a couple
have used them for a couple of years now for the cray diving. We have only seen one shark whilst having them, about a 5-6' Bronzie who stayed about 7-10m behind us the whole dive - did not come within that range at any time.
The zap can be a pain, not so much for you but the persont hat swims over it! get withing about 50cm underwater - especially near the head and you will feel it. But as said, really they are not that bad, so long as you remember its there and dont swim over it, or drag accross your buddy's back, they are not a problem.
We have the 3 of them, when we are out, normally put one just behind the boat on a float, then when getting into the water, sit on the platform, throw it in the water and turn it on, then slip in.

IMO its going to work with
IMO its going to work with docile sharks that come have a look, maximum spook medium shark away from you even in a feeding frenzy but it aint going to stop a huge shark when your bleeding, looking like a seal on the waters surface when it goes for a huge lunge from the deep.

i love mine more now than ever!
I've dived heaps with mine even if it was just casue it felt like it was something rather than nothing. I also take my snare diving outside of cray season so I've got something instead of nothing also. Might be as useless for all I know.
As far as lying on it - yes it hurts. Even getting of it, you'll cop 3-4 blasts before you are off it properly. If it's near you head, you feel your bloody teeth clamping. If you hit your dive buddy (sorry Matt - and he didn't even know it was there the first time
), they move away pretty quick!
I've asked around about the port Jacksons and Wobbies casue we also see them all the time with the shield and they don't care. Apparently its to do with the senses in the noses of the sharks that makes it uncomfortable for them. The bottom dwellers don't have these senses so then no effect.
The radius is about 6 meters in cold water and over 8 in warm water which for me isn't too bad as it's the decompressing that concerns me and if this cord is hanging down 1.5 meters then radiating out another 6 - sweet! In saying that, apparently if you are dinner and the shark is in "attack" mode, the senses are lessened (like the rolling back of the eyes) and they will still go hard.
$500 for a unit. I spend more than that in even dumber stuff even year.... it's my security blanket.

I've hung one over the boat
I've hung one over the boat at the cyclone mooring at the Mackie Islands while feeding the bronzies. They took off and left the frames alone.
I don't wear one but would of today. Spearing well offshore, remote area in the Pilbara, overcast conditions, steep dropoffs, all in all a very sharky feel to today.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

both me and my mate wear
both me and my mate wear them. Saw a decent size shark off the three mile whilst wearing it. The shark didn't come close enough to say whether it worked or not... thank god;)
you don't notice them though yeah as already mentioned if you accidently touch one you'll get a belt out of it. hurts the worst when you cop it in the head... can get bit of a headache!

Paul I have the model before
Paul I have the model before the fredom 7 and swear by it when im shooting but dont realy bother when im not. As for personal experiance I have had Bronzies come up and check me out with it on and when the get too close for my liking ( i would guess 4m away ) they do bugger off pretty Quickly. I had a Big Bronzie ~10 foot follow me from a distance after the initial hello up from 35m to about 12m and did seem inquisitive for me and my fish but did not come any closer than about 4m and further away for the following looks eventually leaving me alone ( this was at the Abhrolis and more than half of us use them and have had simular experiances including the freedom 7 ) I do how ever wonder weather in the first instance if it dose not attract them initially?

Paul I've got one and swear
Paul I've got one and swear by it. Been in 30m behind the reef at Coral Bay, spearing fish,so there was blood in the water, heaps of fish around, mackies schooling around us and a couple of big whalers came in to see what the dramas was and they didn't come within 10m of us, even with fish in the catch bag.
I've never been too worried about sharks, bit more concerned lately with what has been happening, but its a wearing one is good for my piece of mind and my wife feels a whole lot better as well.

Freedom 7
Paul, I have had 1 for a year now, Spearing and craying etc and have never been zapped laying on reefs getting crays nothing so that is a myth.. All i do is run three cable ties down the side of 1 fin and feed the electrode through and it trails behind perfectly..Gives you a bit more piece of mind when you have bleeding fish around or when you roll off the back of the boat and desend through pee soup for 30 odd meters... What convinced me to get one was the spearos use them in nth queensland and swear by them they put on their floats with their fish and say they repell bulls, Whites, Whalers..Now for 600 bucks some sort of protection is better than none..

Not a myth fact as stated by others posting here...problem with ties you have to drill your fins and I dont realy want to do that.

I have had one for a few
I have had one for a few months and must admit got a bit sick of it very quickly after repeated zaps but am slowly getting used to it. Will certainly be giving the cable ties a crack next time i'm out. Have heard that is the way to go with them. the zaps are nothing to be put off by though really. Just lets you know it is there and on.

It works
I have mine on whenever freediving/spearing and usually leave it off when descending because of the shock when wrestling crays under ledge!!!
about a month ago I had a 2.5-3m bronzy or bull of some sort come flying over to me real quick...turned on the shield and never saw him again!
I have the same thing with White Tips and Lemons, dangled the thing right over their head and didn't get a response!
Since moving to Perth tho...I'ma gonna leave it on at all times!!!
nana nana nana nana fishing!!!

plastic rod
i will be using mine this year and listen to the main problem of getting a boot from the head of the sendor unit , might be worth looking at cable tieing one of the plastic strips Cavity king to the cable to keep it straight and away from your body

Not realy a good idea
unless you keep it in a tube straight the strength of the cavity king will make the antennae bend therefore reducing the effective range

I use just the leg one as you can use it for snorkling for crabs.

strangely
the freedom 7 is the most popular with scuba divers not the scuba unit....maybe it's just a cost thing I'm not sure but
they both work as well as each other maybe the antennae is more flexible than the smaller one and dosent get in the way.
