free video editing software suggestions

Have been asked by a family freind to suggest what free video editing software they should use. I have a paid version
Aware the ? has been asked previously a while back however looking for any updated info.
What do you use - any suggestions /pros/cons

Some unsavoury types may
Some unsavoury types may suggest that they obtain a copy of your paid software through a torrent site. Not me though, I hate the thought of anyone taking money from huge international software companies that move money offshore to dodge tax.

The family freind is not exactly computer illiterate but is in his 70's a decent free version should suit him for what he's doing

I made a very basic one for my dad's 50th years ago using windows movie maker which was pretty clunky and very user friendly. I'm sure it has improved a lot in 11 years and you could import video and photos and lay them out in a storyboard and then lay audio music over the top
