Apart from the Bling purchases

Tue, 2009-02-03 13:48

With the RBA announcing another 1% reduction in official cash rates today, the market penciling in another 75pts in March, combine that with the First Home Owners Grant Boost, and agruably there has never been a better time to buy your first house.
A few bargains out there too from what I've heard.
I've been getting a lot of enquiries this past few weeks for loans in the first home buyers market.
I suppose I should qualify those comments by saying I am a licensed finance broker for those that don't know me and think I hand out the free money.WinkLaughing

If you are a one income

Wed, 2009-02-04 18:16

If you are a one income family on just over 100k you get 950 for your missus.  You pay approx 35k in tax and get no concessions from the gov at all.  You probably also work a lot more than 36hrs.

If you and your missus both work and both get 70k each,  You pay approx 25k in tax combined, earn 140k combined income and recieve 1900 bucks.

If you live in the pilbara and earn 100k, You have to pay upwards of 1200/week rent or pay 800k for a 45yr old house.  You pay 150/ltr for fuel (was 200/lt not long ago).  It cost you $100 to go see the doctor,  300/week  per child for daycare if you can even get them into one, it costs you minimum 400/week for food, you electricity bill will be around a thousand for the quarter over summer and you get your 35k tax bill as well.  No hand out from the gov because you are a high income earner.

Yeh we are rich.

Seeing as every tax return over the last 15 years has been intercepted by the CSA I can only assume that these bumbling nazis will just take my $950.00 and send it to the cow down the road, along with her cheque for whatever and for each child. Look's like she will be heading to Bali again soon. #2#*#@

The current WORLD financial crisis has nothing to do with any Australian government or policy - current or passed.

Thing is, I think the current situation on such a scale and impact, is virtually un precedented - unless you go back to the Great Depression and no one seems to have the defintive answer as to the fix - certainly not anything other than a long term one anyway.

I applaud Obama for the exex caps on assisted countries - some of those salaries are obscene. Certainly our Telstra CEO doesn't diserve his salary, and there are many others.

No shot at you Marc, but unfortunately, I don;t see it as 'free' money - the hand out (if it ever happens!) comes at a great cost with a LOT of people joining the unemployment ranks and facing other hardships.

IF I get what's promised, we'll be putting it against our mortgage.

Errant Businesses - not the Gov't

Wed, 2009-02-04 15:13

This whole situation is a result of business at its worst. Rich fat pigs cashing in on a time of boom with no regard what so ever about the rest of the world and what the future might bring. Risk management is about covering their own asses and protecting their bonuses. It's every government in the world now that is forced to prop up the economy. Where are the rich fat pigs now??? Of course everyone will blame KRudd. Perhaps Jonnie Howard and his mate George W Bush should have seen this coming. George can blame Obama and Bin Laden. Everyone in Australia will blame the KRudd.

I see just today that BHP have admitted that it wasn't the best decision they ever made to open Ravensthorpe. Who suffers here? The workers and their families.

A. Is that money to be added

Wed, 2009-02-04 17:50

A. Is that money to be added to your taxable income?

B. How much of that money is returned as GST?

C. How much of that money is returned as income tax?

10%GST of 42 billion =

I get that $300 and possibly pay $100 income tax and 10%GST

Ok so I dont get taxed on it.

I give it to the tackleshop $300 = $30GST and the tackleshop owner pays $100 income tax

The tackleshop owner gives the $150 distributor who pays $15GST and $50 tax

The distributor buys a pool chemicals with his $85 who pays $8.50 GST and $30 income tax.

People stayed employed still paying tax. More tax without a drop in revenue.

How much does the government get each time in return each time it hands it out?

An example with poor stats but it might be the tax returned to the govt is

$130 + $65 + $38.50 = $233.50 tax returns to government

Chaaaaaa Ching!

Vince, we should be looking

Thu, 2009-02-05 14:24

Vince, we should be looking a bit further back than 9/11. Slick Willy Clinton pressed the button for the "sub prime" crisis with the provision of loans to "undeserving" recepients for home loans in the USA through Freddie Mac & Fannie Mae who are both Government controlled "public" companies.

When I say "underserving" I mean that the loan recipient would not meet any normal lending standards. This results in many mortgages being written that have little chance of being conducted in a normal way, which in turn leads to a heap of mortage fire sales (in the USA you can give up a mortgaged propoerty and then be free of the debt whether the property covers the debt or not. In Australia you are still liable for the debt, even after the property is gone).

Simple supply and demand leads to falling property prices and then institutions call in loans to cover their liabilities as their asset (e.g. mortgaged properties) values decline.

All a very rational consequence of a Governmnet sticking its nose into business to gain a few votes.

Very Rudd like

Steve

We won't need a boat. The hotel acts as a FAD and you fish from the hotel grounds (or my ultimate dream)- from your hotel room balcony while habing a bbq and watching the cricket on a widescreen TV.

At the end of it people who spend money on petrol pay approx 30 cents in fuel tax.

They may spend it on alcohol tax, they may spend it on cigarettes

So we are from exact here but people get the picture.

Well actually I am far from exact but through several transactions the money returns to government at an amount quite high on the scale.

People stay employed and its win win.

Technically stock isn't expensable. In fact the change in value of stock = profit according to the taxman and dependant on your business structure.

Actually this is correct and so is Mick. The end Retailer accounts for the 10% of the amount he paid for the stock and takes the GST he gave the Wholesaler off the the GST he sends off.

The wholesaler sends off his GST though well the retailers GST.

So if the retailer had paid $150 for the stock he would deduct x.1 GST and takes it for the product he eg sold for $300exGST $30GST,

I love GST its simplified everything so well unless you selling pizza rolls. Tongue out

Hrm depends on your industry. I used to work for an exempt industry and GST really sucks balls there. My suppliers charges it and has to account for it, I have to account for it and charge it, my customer has to as well.

Although we all get all of it back from the govt we don't get a refund for time wasted accounting for a tax that no one actually pays.

The reason it gave money away was job loss prevention. If the job losses start to occur it can compound. If it does, the govt goes into deficit anyrate.

Its why people were told to slow their spending like pissed sailors ages ago. Smile

Now that people are tight as fishes asses the govt needs to spend like pissed sailors before the momentum falls.

The government isnt ever out of a job. A million extra people on the dole sucks the living preverbial out of their bank account well, our govt bank account.

They have a deficit credit card and you pay the bill.

This is why they want you to blow the money. So it returns to them asap. If you bank it, well.

I agree.

Thu, 2009-02-05 08:26

Go back some months when inflation was on the way up because people were spending and the retailers pushed all the prices up. The Reserve Bank upped interest rates to stop people spending and now look what's happened. Businesses can't sell anything because there is no money to buy stuff. So, down go the rates again and we pump shit loads into the system to help business keep going and to avoid the inevitable layoffs. The reality is that businesses don't plan for such spikes. They just lay off and wait.

The beneficiaries of good times are generally the self-funded retirees who pray on stocks to get by. It doesn't matter how you look at it really, in hard times everyone suffers, in good times business booms, investors get rich but the working class still struggle.

Thu, 2009-02-05 15:09

Ive been overseas working for the past month so Im not fully up with this but I think I have the jist...

They give everyone in the country say 800 dollars on average, every body goes out and has a fat time for a day, buy a new something, go out for tea, get the car fixed, whatever.....

So for one week all this money is being spent yay!

What about the following weeks, months year? It seems like a total idiotic waste of time, but hey if theyre gonna give me some cash ill take it, but as far as stimulating the economy to stop a recession or stop aus falling into the global economic crisis?

That is simply rediculous - a 5 year old would know better!

Its all designed to stop the near dip. Once people are retrenched eg:say 40000 it takes  and costs a lot to build momentum. An attempt to flatten out the economy and keep it going.

I am with you though some of the way, prior to 10 years ago there was a decade of total flatness with little growth. Deregulation of employment was designed to get it going. The economy was further fuelled by equity. Equity in some cases that was driven by rising house prices that may not be there again as the market flattens. That boat and car isnt worth what it was 5 years ago.

Fortunately Australia was a little more regulated so hasnt suffered the same as the US.

However the US has impacted China and China will go on and slowly lose steam till it is supporting its own economy without the commerce/produce sales to the US and other countries. That is some saving grace.

Its not all doom and gloom. The first home market has been kickstarted and other mines are taking on staff.

It would be interesting to see how much credit card debt Australia has.

hell go back 2000 years to

Fri, 2009-02-06 12:14

hell go back 2000 years to the good-book and you get:

Give a man a fish and he is fed today, but starves tomorrow...
Give a man a net and teach him to fish and he is fed for life...!!!

All Rudd is doing is giving you one serving of gruel today, but tomorrow you will still be hungry.

They should have taken the whole $50Billion they will have spent by then, and applied it to massive projects to keep thousands in jobs, not one off pay-outs and small scale sand castles ....

We should be building a rail line from Leonora to Broome, to open up the north to cheaper rail fair and more travel by train. Why can't we have a "Gahn" from Esperance to Broome, it would be a massive winner. Oh and a double line is the only way to go. Economies of scale are built on rail and not on trucks.... look at China, USA and Europe!!! it's easier to subsidize rail costs, when diesel is going through the roof again.

Secondly we need cheap power and more cheaper water.!!!!

six years ago a mine worked on 9c per kilowatt hour, now a new plant is close to 18c per kilowatt hour. To land Sulfur for mining refinery to leach nickel, copper, uranium etc.. you looking at $80 a ton to buy and get the sulfur to our ports, then over $200 a ton to get it past Kalgoorlie!!!! how the @#$% :x can that be???? most mines will be closing not just because of high labor costs, but spiraling transport, water and power costs, killing the costs of utilities and chemicals.!!! FACT.

China is keeping many industries alive by subsidizing rail, water and power, that equals jobs ....

So KRudd the leader.... where is the next $50billion coming from with a shrinking mining and export of raw resources???
When does Australia join the first world and manufacture goods an keep wealth and forex in the country, instead of having to buy everything from kettles to steel rails form the rest of the world ( mainly China!!)

Marx was right, excesses of social welfare and handouts lead to a communism state stance, with more on the dole and less on the tools!!!

Fri, 2009-02-06 13:13

That quote is not from the 'good book'. Lots quote it from Laozi, who lived more than 2000 years ago though.

The point of the package is not akin to serving gruel one day, but being hungry the next. The purpose of the short term injection is to mitigate downward trends, which will then correct themselves due to market forces. If you can stop recession for a short period of time, it can continue on. So, its more akin to giving one serving of gruel so that person can then be prepared to go out and do some grocery shopping the next day, or perhaps make it to a job interview. At least thats the point of it. Hence why it is called a stimulus. A stick cant break down a fence, but if you prod a bull it can ;)

Also, dont forget, handouts are one part of the package (about 30%). Theres more money to be invested in school infrastructue and maintenance, trade training centers, housing, regional road fixes, deductions on business equipment purchases (encouraging purchases) and and insulation and solar rebates (rebates are only a small part of the cost, injecting extra cash, not to mention workmen are required).

Cheap power and water would be nice, but its not that simple. Some would argue that water is too cheap allready (look at it being wasted). You say its not due to increased labour costs, but transport, water and power costs? Labour costs are built into those. Not to mention they are effected by supply and demand, which is not something you can magically fix (unless you increase supply or reduce demand somehow).

Australia wont manufacture goods due to the high costs of labour here. It is not economical to manufacture here paying a factory worker 10 times what you could in another country. Unless you think $500 kettles is the way forward ;)
(btw, countries with predominant manufacturing are second world countries. First would countries are predominantly agricultural)

Edit: Also, Tony, from the last tax bracket creep you would have saved some money on tax (depending on the specifics, it might have even been more than the handout)

now tell this is fair!!!!

Fri, 2009-02-06 12:10

19 of our staff got the chop last Friday.
Most where over the $100K threshold mark, so they will not get any relief or the bulk of the pay-outs, as they won't qualify, cause it's based on last years salary tax info.

So if you now unemployed, but got over $100k last year, the you won't get the $950, if you where over $150k and now unemployed then you don't get the family and kids benefits either!!! So a chap that worked with us, where he and his Mrs both are now out of work, due to BHP chopping her as well, they basically buggered!!! with them not getting over $4000 that other will get and no chance of an engineering job for rest of the year.
ps you try and get a job with an engineering qualification, even at Meyers or at Coles, they quick to tell you that you over qualified and not suitable!!!!

And yes, I was one of the 19 as well!!!! so I'm just as stuffed as my staff are!!! and I will get a big fat ZERO
$0 in the hand out!!!!

Tony - isn't there some statute that gives the right to some sort of redundancy package? I must say i've been nervous - my employer came and saw me this morning - the second time in 3 years and i was honestly packing it. All good for the next 3 months or so but no guarantees. It is a lousy situation, i have 8 staff and they are all nervous as well. Not much going in the development field where we work so i have 3 guys in Kununurra as this is where the only decent job we have won for the last 3 months is. Good luck mate.

Kettles, probably. There is some sectors where technology assists in competing manufacture of goods.

Its a culture of outsource that is driven by some numbnut bean counter who looks at the hourly labour rate and not productivity or quality.

If you think labour is expensive in Australia you need to get your driveway concreted in Japan.

Japan still manufactures products and its reputation has seen many of Australians pay more rather than less for the cheaper rubbish.

One good example of Australia is boats which have been sold to the world.

don't be fooled

Fri, 2009-02-06 16:09

don't be fooled, very little jobs being filled. Even though over 300 positions on seek advertised, less than 5% are being filled, with the majority now frozen. TRUST ME, I have been pounding the pavements for the last few weeks.Only some Oil & Gas roles going, but as for mining Process ~Chemical Engineers.... nothing happening with Raventhorp and other mines dumping loads of bad-cold-water on the industry. 90% of all mining engineering projects are now either canceled or on hold for years. Glough, Batemans, Aker Kavener, WooleyParsons, GRD Minproc, Ausenco, SNC Lavalin and Hatch, have together laid off over 1500 positions in Perth since the beginning of December. We where down 50% in staff numbers from September last year to this week.!!!
This is a hell of a lot worse than many want to believe. IT'S BAD... bad enough to have resulted in over 400 mine workers on 457 Visa's being sent back to their home lands. Bad enough to cause close to 1300 houses being built at present being labeled as "risk" investments, as the home owners have lost their primary incomes.
We going to see a hard time like never seen in 50 years and many will fiddle on thinking all is hunky dory till the lights go out.
I really hope I'm wrong, cause if I'm right, I'm as stuffed as the guy next two me,

oh as for packages, going rate is 2 weeks for every year services. Many people I know have been less than 2 years in their present roles... so they getting less than one months pay at the best.

oh well, catch squid and herring to feed the family,,, thats the answer for now,,,,

ps if anyone needs a good engineer / manager, now's the time to be looking for quality staff before they leave Perth...

How can the government give

Fri, 2009-02-06 17:43

How can the government give us cheap power when they let companies put in gas turbine power stations without waste heat recovery.  Kevin rudd thinks that giving us free insulation will create jobs and reduce emissions.  It will for two months and then that money will be gone.  If he made companies that feed the grid put in WHRSG on thier gas turbines, it would give us cheaper power, create jobs and reduce emissions for the next twenty years.  That is stimulus and value for money.  There would also be no need to double our power bills.

Free insulation is an absolute waste of money.  Put that money into subsidies to power providers for green house emission reductions or even the pipe line from the Ord river to perth and feed the other towns on the way.  That is job creation and future thinking.  Even if the pipe didn't work as well as they thought it would at least we are left with something for our money.

Free insulation is an absolute waste of money.

Considering its been compulsary for the past 5? years in all new homes really, is he giving anyone anything?

Its also keeps the house cool to some extent that heaters come on sooner to heat the house at certain times.

I thought Karratha was originally been given money to build their own infrastructure decades ago in regards to mining?

How can our power bills double in two years? Give with one hand take with the other.

If power doubles then part self power production is going to become very viable very fast. At from an average of $1000 p/a to $2000p/a leccy bills a solar panel a year to near on free after 7 years.

If he made companies that feed the grid put in WHRSG on thier gas turbines, it would give us cheaper power, create jobs and reduce emissions for the next twenty years.

Interesting Laughing

I think they are going to give us $1600 towards insulation,,i am not sure what insulation costs now but "it will go through the roof " Cool just like gas converversons in cars did when the state and Feds offered money.

As folks have said this could put our kids in a very bad spot in later years or it might be the kick in the ass the economy needs,,,we will see.

Australia has donated about $100 mil so far.Lets hope it get to those that need it the most. Oh and by the way theres on such thing as a free money, us and our children who had nothing to do with all this will be suffering under much higher taxes for years and years to come in paying it all back. Conjecture

Fri, 2009-02-13 18:36

So what do we do?? Nothing??? The bill was rejected because some self-centred bastard saw an opprotunity to increase the tax liability over time by pushing his own cart and that of his finaciers/supporters. That's what politics is about, pushing your own cart or towing a party line for your own security and wealth.

Independants can been loose cannons and it has shown here.

Anyway, off my soap box and appologies to those who take offence to my opinion.

Regardless of the bill and the money on offer I support those in dire straights in any way I can and we always will. That's what we are about. Us Aussies are a very resilient and compassionate race, despite our willingness to engage in dabate Smile

The X factor

Sat, 2009-02-14 21:12

The X factor did what he needed to do to wake up a goverment to the death of a sub region and bread basket of the nation. All he was asking for was money already allocated to be moved forward and save the
Murray Darling basin region...
And he got his deal, you get your cheque and your kids will pay off the bill with higher tax's in ten years time!!!
Money should never be handed out willy-nilly... it should be used to create jobs and allow people to work for pay...
not hand-outs !!!
And thats my view on how my tax dollars should be spent.
as Breaker Morant said... "Shoot straight, you bastards! Don't make a mess of it!"
Same goes to Rudd from me, as he has only one magic buller loaded with all our cash and he better shoot it at the right target... their is no spares to reload with!!!

Fair Comments

Sun, 2009-02-15 08:46

It all depends where you sit on this. From looking at the news this morning it seems the people will be asked to decide on this earlier than expected. Again there will be arguements from both sides about opportunism versus the need for the Governement to be able to govern. Regardless, some big heads will roll if a vote happens in the near future.

Hopefully, the fishing will pick up before then. It's been a pretty lean run for me with the weather etc.
