Flat battery

Hi,
Started Ol Yella in the driveway, no problems there. Got to the boat ramp and sounded like it wanted to start, but would not turn over. Disconnected the fuel, thought it might be flooded. Still nothing, checked the starter motor. It was very hot then I tried again and nothing... Just a clicking noise from the choke, check the battery indicator and the green light that says all ok was gone...
Is a bad thing to have a hot starter motor, or is it normal.

Those green light indicators are crap
We have had several batteries with those now in my 4wd, had the light showing green, put the multimeter over the battery and had it less than 9 volts. My father also had this problem with a vehicle in their convoy while on the Canning Stock Route. Brand new battery, green light, no voltage.
Dont trust them, buy a multimeter.
