Take plenty of burley and cast poppers from the ramp…you have to stand about waist deep though   Get ya mates to have video and cameras at the ready.

I’ve only fished the mouth of the South which is 75 kms downstream and the creek near the mouth which is another 15km long – awesome Barra spot – 30 barra off one snag in 1 hr…giddyup.  Big black Jewes at night too!!!

Skitterpops all the time – can’t beat the surface smash.  This time of the year,  you'll need deep lures.

Not the best time of the year though.  For such a short stay I’d seriously just book a guide to experience the best that is available at the time (well at least for a day).  Learn from that, then go ya selves.

 Take a trip down to Gunlom too one day - great spot and plenty inbetween.  A few rivers to flick lures about aswell. Ya lucky sod....need a designer to draw pretty pictures for you?

Big worrie for us so far is the bloody job is running on schedule and I was hoping for some 'sit-around-&-wait' time while the contractor plays catch -up....lol....bugggers

how do you get to the south mouth Pete?

I had a look at our tracks&trails maps, and did not find any tracks to the mouth of the river. Or do you have to be brave and run the river by boat all the way??? if thats possible.

Biggest problem at the moment is all accomodation and tours are fully booked while we up there! We staying in a mine camp, so no worries for sleepy time, just wanted to do a few trips in the park.

one chap already got some nice 40cm~70cm Barra's from the river banks about 3km walk in from the mian road. I'll scan some pics and put them up.

Beware of the flavour of the Barra as the dry season drags on Tony - for a couple of years i fished Corroboree Billabong which is down Arnhem Highway towards Kakadu on the Mary River - absolutely beautiful spot but as for the Barra- the Faulkner's crumbed snag would taste better. You can also fish the bank at Cahill's Crossing at the border of the Aboriginal section of Arnhem Land - be careful, a bloke was taken while fishing on the floodway when i was up there. The locals would be the best people to ask.

I will leave the "crocs ' alone lol....
ian, thanks for the tip on the Cahill Crossing. We mostly will be catch and release, as we have no cooking facilities at our camp for ourselves. joys of a "mine kitchen"!

Lure wise and line ???? what suggestiong. I was thinking of taking my Certate with 20lb braid on it and my Abu baitcaster with 15lb mono, and maybe a third bigger reel ( Saltiga 4500) for beach fishing, if we get up to the sea side for poppers. Rod wise I have a awsome Pacific composite baitcaster 8 foot, rated at 20lb, but I know sailies had been taken on it by the first owner, then a Live Fiber 9 foot (10~15lb) and my 9 foot Europopper PE6 rod as well. That should do the trick.

Partial gas tomorrow...apparently?

You can get to the mouth easy Tony.....just along way - 75km (even though probably only 50km as the crow flies).  The sand bars on the corners can be on the opposite side of what you would expect them to be - got caught once).  I have got a detailed map I can send if you wish.

If not using a guide, I'd head South of ramp to about 10km upstream from the ramp to Nourlangie Creek - just work the snags and sand bars at the mouth.

You right Ian - we used to fish off the back of the ute at crossings.  Also used this a few times

Mate go buy the bible, Fish Finder book (the annual, not monthly)and get on the fishfinder forum, excellent info there. the Souths a terrific river with plenty of options up and downstream of the ramp. The book will give you all the info for fishing and navigating the river, good luck TH and hope it isn't all work and no play.
