either fish the bank or the front of it, plenty of ground, anchor and burley up, can get some good pinks sambos skippy etc, lots of big dhuies get caught on the inside
May I ask where this reef is "casuarina shoal or coventry reef" more or less or is this just a name used for 5 fathom. Sorry I'm new in WA waters still trying to work out the ins and outs.
Burley:
In melbourne I use to burley behind the boat with chunks, Is this the way to burley here also on 5 fathom or on the bottom with those burley boms?
David, Assuming you have a sounder.........look for the areas that show some large depth changes. It's hit and miss as some spots are so full of wrasse that you can't catch anything else. When I fish on the bank now, I use a drift rig and paternoster. Have caught some good skippy, harlies and black ass out there......but have caught my share of wrasse too. Recommend trying without burley first as if the fish are biting you can limit bringing in the wrasse. Be aware that on the back it flattens out at around 20-25 metres. Don't be afraid to try the inside as well........ have caught some thumper whiting on the inside. Make sure you take a release weight as you may encounter some baby snapper. The last one I picked up there required careful handling to get him back down. Cheers, Ben
as mentioned try just inside or outside the bank, we havnt fished it for a while but there is some nice skippy around, if you go out a bit further to around the 30 mtr mark you can find some lumps to fish off. we get most of our kg at the 30mtr mark some over 1kilo but also on the flat ground there is plenty of good sand whiting
Only a couple of times i have caught whiting (biggest is 62cm) around F F B but i find round the 20 - 30m mark like you said it flattens out but have you caught any thing going 40m + behind the bank?
Last time out before the ban it was like a parking lot out on the 48-50 meter line!
Russ, are you anchoring up and using berley on the 30 meter lumps? Haven't had any luck drifting them ...just assumed they were fished out! Have you guys gotten into any big skippy lately? Our normal spots were dry last time out and had to settle for some thumper whiting and a huge flounder.
No but im going to the bank on sunday i've read in the local fishing reports thats theres been some but last year around this time we anchored 1km out the back of straggers near seaward reef and a pulled a couple over 1.5 kilos
we have drifted through the area but once we found a nice kg spot all we do now is anchor and burley, just got to be in the right area, we have got kg , dhui , b/bums and pinkys all in the same area as well as the skippy
Let me know how you did. Didn't get a chance to pick up my boat from the shop so I'll be knocking out projects around the house. May try a sickie this week though if the fish are back on the bite :) Russ, I guess I'll give the 30 meters a try again. Haven't targeted KG in awhile.
just look for the broken ground and you will never know, we have one good spot that only a couple of friends know about, havnt hit the spot now for 6 months so next time it should be good. generally look for ground along the the stretch out back of garden island
