Fishermen Harrased on Busselton Jetty.
A wellknown local fishing identity went for a nice quiet fish on the jetty while the jetty train was operating and was harrassed and insulted by people going to the Under Water Observatory who obviously don't fish and you wont read this in the local papers because they're just not interested. This is what relationships between the tourists and fishers have deteriated into which is a real shame because if it was the reverse situation no doubt the local newspapers would be full of calls to ban fishing. As if it's not bad enough we have to tolerate the BULLY tactics and threats from the Shire council to close off the jetty at night and we now have to put up with this rubbish during the day time which I know wont be tolerated by the fishermen. Just another case for fighting for your fishing rights.

Thats crap
It was the fishos paying thier entrance fee that kept the jetty goin years ago,I will be down there tonight but I will keep my mouth shut cause I know what these do-gooders are like,they are probably insulting the fishing community on facebook or one of those I can say what I like sites,cause they can get away with it.My family and I have been fishing down there for 35 years and my uncle worked the steam trains out there.We have always fished responsibly and respect that place,buggered if they are gonna tell me what I can do!

Like your style ahosty about keeping your mouth shut because I know as well as you do they seize on anything that that they can portray as being anti-social behavour. For you guy's that don't know what is going on the, local shire council believe a fish is worth more money to the local economy by being viewed at the UnderWater Observatory than for that fish to end up on some-ones dinner plate.Like they own the fish in the ocean. NOT.

Watched it last night for a while jpicko untill they started on about local seafood being Marron and beautifull local red emporer , the only local thing about that was it was from a local fish shop. I gave up after that and changed channells.

Hi mate
Can you elaborate on what was said and if it was by older tourists or just young guys being douche bags?
I fish the jetty a fair bit as I have a holiday place down there but have never had an issue there. Although being 6'3 and about 95kgs might scare a few of the little tit rats off.
Would be intereting to hear what they were having a crack at thats all.
Also ahosty let us know how you go. Might be heading there this weekend.

Ever since the Jetty was opened in Febuary tailor marc the local fishers are under constant pressure to having surrender their fishing rights all because of the dollar signs in the eye of the council.

A lot of people have got a lot of ideas on how to deal with this unfortunatly mr plod can read websites like this so it's best keep our little secrets to our selves but what we do need is support from the fishing public. Again it's us against the greenie group who operate the commercial interests on the jetty.

We are not getting the full story so its a bit hard to comment but these days i think we are getting a lot more animal rights folks running around who believe fishing is cruel and barbaric, its nothing to do with the local council if visitors are abusing fisherfolk.
I do know years ago the problem with some fishos from outside Buseelton would clutter the train lines with rods and prams and god knows what not knowing any better.

The Shire Council Ran the line.
When the Shire Council went through the process of amending the local jetties law to stop people fishing on the end of the jetty they ran the line that they want to protect the marine environment from fishing and that was from the shire staff as well as the councillors and the greenie group as well and mud sticks. What happened was a sting ray was caught on the small swimming jetty along side the main jetty and when it was released didn't survive and lay for two days on the bottom. That same sting ray turns up on the main jetty out towards the end big news for the papers but a setup with the headlines saying Sting Ray left to rot on jetty by fishers. We're getting used to this type of behaviour from greenies but the anger just gets worse.

Was just speaking to my father in Busselton on the phone he has been reading a bit about things in the local paper,,he did mention some squid fishers are cleaning the squid and leaving the guts and ink sacks behind on the jetty, sad to hear a stingray died,,i thought they were pretty hardy creatures ? Not a good look for them to be laying dead on the bottom or on a jetty,,fishermen really have to clean up their act cause the Greenies will be onto us like a ton of bricks,,times are changing,,

alot of squidders down there, use ur rod and jig and swing it round wildly and act like a loony, bout to keep the haters away.

Took the family there...
...about 2 years ago. We were having a good time, catching some herring and small skippy, when a group of teenagers landed a large ray just down the jetty from us. They proceeded to cut its tail off...not just the barb, the whole tail...and then stabbed it numerous times before throwing it back. If the train users had seen something like this beforehand I think any negative attitude of theirs towards fishermen would be justified.
We all know the saying, "there's a bad apple in every crowd"...unfortunately in our game there is most likely a higher percentage of "bad apples". You don't have to go too far or look too hard at any popular fishing spot before you come across a moron or six.

you have a good point about these bad apples, these ones might be in the class of " i got nothing else to do so lets go fishing fo a bit of a laugh". not the sort of folks that frequent the waters to throw a line in.
As far as fisho's being abused along the jetty, it happens everywhere but you just hear about it in a spot that is used by all more often.
Not good anyway. People just need to get along with their own lives instead of making it hard for others

those of you that don't think this is happening need to pull there heads out of the sand and get out in the real world.
I've been hearing more than a few stories of fisho's being abused and spat on by 'joe public' and it's only a matter of time before someone gets a little carried away and this will all turn sour. I know for a fact that if one of the fellas I work with (who are out there reguarly) got spat on the shit would hit the fan big time and there would be more than a few sore heads out there.
Be under no illusions guys that it's a big shit fight down here and the bottom line is $$$, end of story. Very sad.

We wiil see what heppens when they ban fishing there.
Local shops will no longer sell bait, pies and sauce, tackle, burger's ,chips, hats, thongs, squid jig's, etc, etc.
Because there will be no fisho's buying anything.
Do they think the tourist who stay for one hour are going to spend money in their shops ? . It's the fisho's who stay all day or even weeks that spend the dollars.
It makes no sense to me . OMO .

the Effects are Already being Felt.
When jessica came to town I was sitting with a local business man and he doesn't know whether to cut and run or stick it out and it all becomes really hard to sink funds into his business if in the end he's got to walk away it. If fish are there fishers keep coming back week after week but the yuppies who visit the jetty have the attitude of, been there done that and then they move on.

After the fisho's are gone, Jessica will set up the oil rigs and the greenies can look at all the pretty colour's on the water.

Ive only ever yelled at a fisherman when this little fag took 6 undersize bream, 18-22 cm, and killed about 20 blowies by cutting their tails off so I went up to this guy, 17 maybe, told him he's a dickhead and tipped his bucketfull of herring and gardies in the water, I've honestly had enough of these wankers who just don't give a stuff about anything the selfish buggers, if we can stick to the rules and respect the fish why can't everybody?
