Fish Hook removal
After reading Colins account of how Dave got a hook stuck in his thumb it reminded me of a nifty way of how to remove hooks.
I came across this Youtube clip which shows in detail how it is done.

I tried it on a mate a few years ago. He was tightening a blood knot on a small long shank Gamakatsu when it slipped and he drove it into his thumb. He was squealing like a stuck pig and wanted to go back to shore and we were at the back of GI and hadn't even got a line wet yet.
So I sat him down and poured him a cuppa and explained a few things, like my real name is Doctor Toothfish. Yea right. That went down real well. LOL I told him about this technique that we used to use on the fishing boats all the time (bull$%@t).
Well more important the two options were 1. Pull the pick, steam home, put the boat on the trailer,go to the Doctor or Hospital and generally stuff up the whole day or 2. Let me pull the hook out stick a Bandaid on it and have a nice day fishing.
I explained how I was going to do it and initially he didn't want to know about it but I eventually won him around. The most important thing is that downward pressure is applied to the eye of the hook. I told him that I was going to pull it out on the count of three (more bull$%@t) cos I went One, and as I was saying Two I whipped it out and it was all over and done with. Has anyone tried this method before?
We went on to have a good days fishing.
I know that some Doctors don't even know this technique and would push the hook through the skin, cut the barb off and then pull the hook backwards. A word of caution if in any doubt then just go to the Dr's/Hospital.
Cheers.
Toothfish.

seen that one before, works
seen that one before, works well as long as you put the pressure on as you said or you will end up with a nice chunk of flesh with the hook. still hurts tho

Yes have done this ..... Mate somehow managed to bait up his thumb while he was
casting . Chucked his thumb into an ice slurry for a few minutes .
He looked away and didn't feel a thing.

I have heard of this method
I have heard of this method before but never used it. Once watched the old man trying to push the point of a bluntish hook thorugh the skin. He eventually got it through (after about five minutes and nearly passing out - he would not let me near it) and cut the barb and we continued fishing should have given this a go.
Only time i got hooked the barb was already sticking out so was a simple matter of cutting the barb off them pulling back through.
Incidently I squash my barbs down with light pliers which would make it even easier to get back out the way it went in (and keep my hooks sharp if need to go the other way)..
Cheers Paul

as long as there is a 1ltr
as long as there is a 1ltr bottle of Chivas on the boat, you can do what you like. I have seen that vid before and it still cracks me up. His response after the trebel is removed is great.
Who carries a bottle of Scotch on theire boat anyway??
I think the lesson is to crush the barbs of your hooks, especially on the trebbles no matter what.

i did that to
i did that to myself.
fishing in queensland creek , i got my hardbody lure stuck in a tree , so grabbed hold of it while the boat was moving downstream, all the time the rod was buckling over with the pressure.
when it did finally give , it drove the treble deep into my thumb.
pliers and a count of three.
no way on earth i'd return to the ramp. time to man up and channel rambo
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

revenge!
managed to get a hook through the miss' finger last year. she blames me, i blame her for getting the boat record for biggest samson fish. Lesson learnt.. dont leader a fish with your hand below the first dropper especially wen its a slippery 30kg sambo and your boyfriend is trying to lift it over the gunwhale
Doctor did the same trick

took a big hook in my right
took a big hook in my right hand middle finger back in the 80's. we where hand-line fishing for snoek at the time and they the size of big spanish mackeral that side, so you use big hooks!
my uncle Frank just said tuff, the fish are biting, harden up.
He pushed hook through the other side of the skin, cut the barb off and out it came. I yelled like stuffed pig till I realized it was over long ago...lol. then a mouth full of magic sherry to warm me up and we where fishing again for Kob ( mulloway).
Still got the scar to show off today...lol
smaller ones, well the treble hook in the leg when we where down south in the leg was taken out easily by Emery and the boys laughing on. Some people don't crush their barbs and we hate them for it in times like that!
And the one in the forearm from a mates cast. ( trebble-prong again!)that was yanked out before I even had a chance to yell when he used a pliers and just gave it a quick tug. The best way still, as you don't even have a chance to react, and it's out.

Seen
Seen quite a few hooks in hands, fingers and heads plus one in a thigh[pulling a salmon net and the blokes got hooked on a treble tangled in the net ,nearly drowned him before we could get cutters to cut the hook].
One that stands out was my stepson, Robbie got a big tuna circle in to the palm of his hand.Jeff[son-Deepwater] steamed the wetliner they were working over to the boat I was skippering to have a look.Told them to get him to the doctor and to take another tuna circle so the doc would have an idea of the hooks shape.Had to be cut out, no pull out or push through with those hooks.
