Fellow Fisho Etiquette

I just wanna let out something that happened last night that has left me pretty pissed off.

I went down to the Kwinana jetty last night seeing that we had some strong easterlies and i had a chance of getting a balloon out there hoping for some sharks. One of the rods i had out was the 8'11 pe5-6 Sylphy combo'd with a Spheros 14000fb and spool with about 280m of 50lb daiwa accudepth. Now while fishing, i saw a couple, some guy and his mrs turned up and setup about 2meters from my rod. Then i watched them cast their first line and incidently had crossed my line, so as i walked towards them to lend a hand to undo it, it was done and my line was back in the water before i got there. now after tightening my line up, they casted out again, but at this time i was distracted with my kids running around. Next thing i noticed was them fiddling with their tackle for a couple of mins then packed up and left. I actually commented to some fisho nearby that they werent here long. maybe about 15mins later, i went to check the bait on the rod, as i started reeling my rig in, saw that there was 2 separate stupid newbie rigs consisting of 1/2 a sabiki and a ball sinker slightly tangled in my line. about 30cm further down, my line has ended. NOW, these 2 F#$KEN idiots have got tangled, and instead of saying anything, the've cut over 200m of my line right off, without even gettin the rest of their rig and taking it with them. over 200m of NEW daiwa accudepth, a $25 shark hook, 150lb shark trace, my north star strobe light and a tuna head i just bought from oceanside. GONE. now this was the first line i put in the water. i only brought a couple of rods with me and travelled quite light. Now because of these 2 inconsiderate clowns, it ruined a good night for me and just spoiled a night out fishing with my family, as well as costing me a bundle. I swear, if they were still around when i noticed, they wouldnt have been able to walk away after doing something obviously and completely idiotically inconsiderate.

There isnt any snags around, and the line was cut probably 3-4 meters from the rod tip so, yea I KNOW it was cut.

God how can some people be like this, and if they're on fw by chance, UP YOURS! and send me a pm so we can catch up, i got something for ya

Etiquette seems to be a thing of the past

Sat, 2010-02-27 15:20

Have had a couple of "discussions" about etiquette with ppl who have set up right next to me then crossed my line cast after cast (once or twice fine but if u cant cast dont fish right next to someone else). Especially frustrating when balooning or even sliding as it takes so long to get a bait out.

Hope u see em down there again mate and get a chance to throw their gear in the water!!

Unbelievable

even on the beach, if we see somebody already there, old fart will keep driving till we see a nice clear patch and we set up.  HS Chan I'm damn glad that it wasn't old fart as I think he'd be up for assault, he can't stand inconsiderate a%$holes (sorry for the swearing) whether on the beach or fishing out in the boat, especially the boat, sitting there fishing some twat cruises past at 60knots, sets up a really good bow wave or cruises past and pings your spot.

Where has common decency gone.

That's pathetic

I had a clown do something similar to me up near Yanchep awhile back. Most anglers are pretty good, but as with the rest of society there are those that have no thought for the people around them,.

Shore-based anglers may use

Shore-based anglers may use a maximum of two fishing lines.

Rods and lines must be attended.

Umm, ok. Well, i dont know what you're getting at but, they knew it was my rod and as being attended, i cant have more then one rod used but apart from each other? I was about 5m away from it and if thats too far by anyone elses standards, bad luck. Because seeing i was there with my family, next time i SHOULD stick out 2 rods each, 8 rods in the water better? Lol. Anyways, i was ballooning and having both balloons out with the rods close together is a stupid thing to do.

  Hi Ya, I certainly don't

Tue, 2010-03-02 21:16

Hi Ya,

I certainly don't condone cutting a pesons line, but I can just imagine the other guys going home and having a conversation along these lines.

"Went down to the Kwinana jetty to do some fishing but some clown had his rods and kids spread out all over the jetty.  Just how much room does he need?  Does he think he owns the place or something?  Cut his line off.  That'll make him think twice next time."

With all due respect H.S. to have your rod and kids rod 5 metres away is spreading yourself out a bit mate. (Presuming that distance between your rods).

Cheers.

ok this is how it was. I was

Wed, 2010-03-03 15:49

ok this is how it was. I was next to my bags and 1of my ballooned rods that was in the water. My rod was on a rod holder that was strapped to a rail behind me so as the line was overhead and not scratchin up my rod on the jetty and out of everyones way. My kids werent fishing but just running around everywhere. My mrs was fishing for bait right off the jetty probably a metre to the right of my rod. Now to the left of me, there were 2 guys fishing close by, maybe about 2metres away from me and i actually had asked them if they'd mind if i put up my other rod to the left of them seeing they were fishing for bread and butter up close. They agreed and i did. Now this was the 3rd time i moved my rod because as it was gettin into the busier time of the night, ppl kept rocking up and i just wanted to give others space. Now before i moved my 2nd rod to where it was, there were actually a group of 3blokes, 1 woman and 2kids that were fishing to the left of the 2 guys on my left. Now i did a nice thing by asking if they would prefer to swap spots with where my rod and mrs were fishing (to the right of the centre of jetty) since most of the lit up more up for the kids and i had a gas lantern in the car. At this time the drift was slowly moving left (south). And since i noticed that they were trying to cast nw for tailor and we had e to ne winds which was moving my balloon sw slowly, i thought it would be more conveient to swap. Ok now. Where i was standing, me and the gear as well as the mrs took up about 2-2.5m from left to right. And nearly everyone there took even more space with less gear and people. We had 3 rods in the water, 1 with me, 1 above the blokes next to me that i asked, and my mrs was catchin whiting for bait. The jetty was pretty much full, and these 2 had to try squeeze in, obviously seeing there there was fk all space, had to fish to the left of my 2nd rod and casting nw over other lines. The guys next to me even commented something like "i wonder where these 2 gonna park?". I actually tried several times to limit how much space i take up and i asked for permission if needed just to be considerate. Trust me, i actually didnt take much room at all, and none of my gear was messy nor scattered all over the jetty. Gear all neat and against rails out of walking way and others.

My mrs was using my kids rod coz i told her no need to setup more rods. My kids rod wasnt 5m away from mine. My 2nd balloon rod was over the left shoulder of a guy to my left that has said hes cool with me placing it there since it wont be in the way anyway.

So what if they did have a conversation on the way home?

Wed, 2010-03-03 16:17

At the end of the day, the jetty was full.  If thats the case I wouldnt walk up and fish in a spot where I would likely cause a tangle.  Its not as if it wasnt the only jetty in Perth, go find a different place to fish, try some new ground.

Cutting the line is just the icing on the cake, did the bloke who thought he would come down and camp out on Chans spot think HE owned the jetty?

Its always been first in best dressed for fishing spots, and I think its pretty weak to call Chan out for taking his kids out to a jetty for a good nights fishing and to have some P.O.S ruin it for them.  Where did you learn to fish? I reckon your father or Grandfather took you to a jetty to teach you the basics.

Those guys sound like

Wed, 2010-03-03 19:33

Those guys sound like complete clowns! I run into people like that at hillarys northwall all the time. They sit on the disabled platform (which is usually packed, hence why i dont bother fishin off it) and they cast their lines out parallel to the rocks (not out to sea) and wind up casting over the lines of every single person fishing off the rocks. I mean how stupid can u get! This one guy tangled 3 peoples lines all in one go!

know exactly what you mean

Tue, 2010-04-13 21:45

know exactly what you mean superman. used to frequent hillaries almost every weekend. take the corner spot on the disabled platform and be casting straight out from the corner, towards the north and still get tangled by people casting from the adjacent wall. also spent one afternoon/night down there, i had been there since midday with my big rod in the water, hoping for something big and my smaller rod spinning for whatever. then a group of no less than 25 decided to rock up
and take positions all around me. i mean, the whole of hillaries and you decide to park up less than a metre from me? tangling the big rod, tangling the small rod. i got hooked up to 5 of them at once! i put my small rod aside and sat on the rock there for about half an hour, blasting the radio with my big rod in the water. line started slowly spilling off after a while and i got pissed off that it was another tangle. line really spilt off once i struck the rod and i was hooked onto something. 20 mins later, landed a stingy and within 20 minutes of catching it, this group of people all had the biggest sinker and biggest hooks they had and were trying to lob out whole prawns, mullet, occy, all the bait they had. after all losing there rigs to snags, they pissed off and left me in peace finally. did well on herring after they left too :) there is little to no etiquette in fishing. just look at flangies experience on south mole for example.

Wed, 2010-03-03 20:42

i watched 5 indonesian guys jump out of their car at the freo boat harbour, wind was westerlies, they setup on the west of everyone. Was about 15 other lines in the water all spinning for tailor. These jokers all plonked out floats as far as they could and we all watched them all drift all the way east. Inconsiderate f'ing Wankers i swear

Mate thats Metro fishing these days.

Wed, 2010-03-03 23:46

I remember when i lived in Palmyra about 15 years ago and fished point walter nearly every night in summer. It was a 5 min walk down the road and better than sitting in a non a/c house. Even then it was packed and tangles and aggravation were common.

But what used to get up my nose the most was the tossers that would just cast willy nilly with out looking behind them first.I mean its a family Place and course kids will go running up to see whats in your bucket. Mate it was scary how many kids nearly lost their eye or something.

That was a long time ago and could just imagine its gotten alot worse since then.I mean all these fishing shows pumping all the hi tech fancy japanese gear, with all the fancy trimmings and all the fancy new tackle has turned fishing into a huge joke.

Dont get me wrong braid line, graphite rods and super smooth reels are definitely advantageous..

The fishing culture of today has made me want to find spots where there is hardly any one around. But thats becoming harder and harder as more people populate this awesome State.I find myself driving further and further away from the capital to get a nice spot. And every year new roads, more population and wicked rumours make that a thing of the past.

I know im having a bit of a rant, but thats unfortunately fishing these days.

I hardly fish landbased these days. Id rather go out on a boat and try new avenues But even then on a boat you still get harassed by tossers, pinging your spots. Its never ending.

Unfortunately mate i have come to the conclusion that fishing and etiquitte, shouldnt be used in the same sentence..Because experience has told me, its only going to get worse!

Sounds like the whole tangle

Thu, 2010-03-04 00:13

Sounds like the whole tangle deal was intentional. Probably saw what you had and did it on purpose to pinch it. I bet if you walked away they would have done a runner with more than just your rig. Goes to show you that can’t trust anyone.

im actually kinda hesistant

Tue, 2010-04-13 22:47

im actually kinda hesistant to go to the moles and hillary's now (despite having never set foot in hillary's)...back in summer every time i went to the north mole i always had people setting up like 3-4 metres away from me and ALWAYS on the windward side of me, so i couldn't cast safely at all. you'd think people like this were actively trying to get you to bugger off even tho you were there first...

this is partly the reason why im more into river fishing nowadays. wading is brilliant for getting away from these sorts of people...more fun and challenging too imo

Hillarys incident

Wed, 2010-04-14 10:49

I was @ Hillarys last week and had a run in with an idiot.

We fished just left of the platform on the rocks throwing straight out and a baffoon (who arrived after us) casted off the platform straight over my head, left his rod there and moved away into his position back on the opposite side of the platform.

My mate and I looked at eachother thinking 'who does this guy think he is', we moved over a bit and continued fishing.

With a WSWester and incoming tide, our line drifted over his unmanned rod, we told him that a line may have crossed. He then proceeded to abuse us for it, and saying he didnt care that we were here first!  WTF?!

not sure of the rod, sorry.

'old' is relative lol. I would say he was mid to late 30's, large build, short hair, 6ft+.  He was with his mrs, if she got any closer to the beach, they may have tried to push her back in!  Tongue out

I used to be put off by the number of fishos @ Cott Groin, but they seem to play by the rules a lot more now that ive experienced other popular spots.

Cutting lines

Wed, 2010-04-14 14:53

H S Chan , just interested but was your line out and the other people actually wound it in and cut of a section--200mts and then sent it out again prior to you winding it in ??  or maybe they had cast over your line and the moving line as they wound it in cut your stationary line,     This still doesnt excuse them from the ignorance they displayed.

could happen but barely

Wed, 2010-04-14 18:37

could happen but barely possible.
Im guessing they cut it while trying to untangle and get theirs back but as the tangle was bad, they gave up and left.
Cutting line while winding over mine can happen, but their line has pretty much gotta sit on the exact same spot on mine for a lengthy period and retreive gotta be pretty fast to burn or cut through. Judging by their line i think their line is probably at most about 15-20lb mono. Mine, brand new 50lb braid, would take a fair bit for that to cut as both are relatively smooth surface. Also if it was cut while winding in, it cut would be further down the line from my rod. My rod was mounted off a rail up high and tip was maybe 12' up, line was only cut a couple of metres from the tip.

I know what you're saying, but they've pretty much done the dirty im sure of it.

I think you are right to be

Thu, 2010-04-15 20:30

I think you are right to be upset H.S.Chan. These sort of people are like line jumpers when it comes to a que. No consideration about anyone but themselves. Unfortunately it's getting to the stage where it is just better to pack up and go yourself as any form of confontation can end up in disaster.

Better to smile within yourself and know you were right and they were wrong, and they will get whats coming to them eventually.
