with plain old soft plastics from my boat.

From shore though, it might be a bit tedious with casting distance etc and slices would be my preferred option (aside from bait).

Halco Roosta Poppers

Mon, 2008-12-15 17:47

Deffinately poppers for me. Especially the Halco Roosta's. I allways end up crushing the barbs as it's a pain in the a$$ to get the hooks outa the fish when there is a hot bite. I've also done really well with the slices from 20-65g.

"holy sh!t, did you see that?" haha

Mon, 2008-12-15 18:54

Generally i try to use the right size lure for the right tailor, no point using 80g slices on 30cm tailor and no point using 5cm Sp's on 50cm tailor. Try to match the hatch as they say.

Since the weekend i have been converted to snapbacks as they are litterally unkillable!

For small tailor 25-40cm ( i dont target 25 though, ) I use sp's within the 3" and 5" inch range such as atomic jerkshads , squidgy wrigglers, gulp minnows, and lures within 10g to 30g. Raiders 10,20 and 30g,Laser pro 45, Twisty's and slices and streamers 10,20 and 30.

For bigger tailor i prefer my raider 65g and 50g twisty, And bigger plastics like Gulp and atomic jerkshads 5" (gotta go heavy for casting distance so a rather heavy jig head).

Popper i have used a rapala skitter pop (quite small ) got one tailor about 35cm at narrows, never really tried apart from that. Actions gotta be hot.

I never bait for tailor, it works but its no fun casting sitting and waiting.

Mon, 2008-12-15 19:02

i have chromies in the sparkler, twisty etc range from 5-30gms, a 15g raider, 20g wobbler, 2 roosta poppers, berkley frenzy 7gm, halco streamer 30g and a smilin jack minnow.

so i have a few things to throw around

the most i have had with sp off rocks is a follow up by a nice tailor but thats it cos of casting

any spots for lure chucking you guys can recommend?

atm im just throwing em round hilarys and have had small amounts of luck but im guna persist

i dont know many other decent spots in northern suburbs a part from ocean reef and mindarie which I haven't put much time into

any help to point me in the right direction would be appreciated

cheers,

Reuben

Re: match the hatch

For instance, I have been doing well throwing 3 or 4" paddletail soft plastics at tailor while others around me have been throwing large twisties/poppers/large swimming lures and catching nothing.

While "dissecting" the weekend catch, this little bugger was in the gut of one we caught and it became pretty clear why we were successful and others struggled for even a bite.

I cant go past the

I cant go past the excitement of throwing poppers for tailor, seeing your popper bloop along the surface then watching as a tailor screams up to it then smashes it right in front of you is priceless. I go poppering for tailor everywhere from Fosters Beach(Bremer Bay) all the way up to Kalbarri, and by far i'll say my most favourite popper is the Fat R's colour doesnt seem to make a difference for me. In windier locations or where distance is required i use the Richter Plug Predator lures, seem to go good for casting distance but you have to retrieve them pretty fast to get the required action.

Around perth the only places off the shore i have done good throwing poppers for tailor is walking and casting in areas like between trigg and hillarys, and between ocean reef and burns beach. All that reefy looking country is perfect terrain for tailor to hunt and patrol around especially around dawn. Have messed about with SP's but found that hard to cast them the required distance in most shore locations and the fact the tailor just chew the hell out of them. But hey if it means you catch tailor when nothing else works why not!

I have a bit of success with the same metals you described, just prefer watching a tailor smash a popper!

I have had luck before with the small saltiga stik baits they have a bit of weight to them for casting and get smashed by tailor and bonito.just a bit pricey to lose
