Uni for sure and the heavier the less turns you need. 150lb 3 turns is plenty.

I use the uni up to 80 lb, but find the centuri knot easier to tie in really heavy mono like 130. Centuri is a very strong knot. Both centuri and uni are slip knots.

For 150lb plus

I would crimp.  If you want to use a knot then a uni will do it (make a ball of the tag end with heat).

Do you think crimping can

Do you think crimping can weaken the mono at all?

Only if it is not done properly

... if you are not convinced crimp it and then test it.  Testing will offer some reassurance or otherwise as to whether you are crimping well.

Crimps usually test higher

Crimps usually test higher than knots.

Uni Knot

Mon, 2010-11-08 20:07

Always use the uni knot right up to 300lb mono. You just need something to go through the other eye of the swivel or bight of the hook to anchor it when you pull it tight and plenty of spit.

The guide I fished with in New Caledonia used a 3 turn uni on 300lb mono. He swore by it . Held on to some fairly reasonable fish for us.

def the uni. when tightening

Tue, 2010-11-09 22:44

def the uni. when tightening it i use a piece of steel or timber under my feet while pulling it tight, if it slips then tie again as you dont want it to let go at the wrong time but as mentioned use heat to put a ball on the tag end and then it shouldnt pull through
