Everything LEADERS
Well thought I would start this thread off .
Everyone new to jigging will be wanting info and getting ready for the up comming season so I might as well start now .
Leaders , well I use Penn 10X in 100lb , good honest stuff not too expensive and works .
I have used the Surecatch leader in clear and it's good and it comes with crimps which is a bonus , I don't crimp myself but you can allways use them somewhere else .
I find the Surecatch drags a bit when you pull the knot up tight so a bit of lube ( read spit) works a treat I use a 3 or 4 turn uni for attatching my leader to swivel and have found it holds up well .
Other leaders used is Black majic, Jinkai, and some crazy expensive japanese stuff , all good but I stick with the stuff I'm used to availability is a big thing for me as I go thru a fair bit and Penn 10X I can even pick up at Kmart if I have to .
As for leader length , well you need a few wraps on the spool when the fish is close so 4 to 6 m is fine as the rod is only 1.8 m max so a couple of wraps on the spool and add the rod length which gives you a few m to the fish for the decky to get a couple of wraps around his hand with out a rod tip getting in the way to bring the fish alongside for quick release or onto the deck for hook removal pics etc then back in the drink .
Also a good reason for a longer than usual leader is so when you jigging away furiously the knot hits the rod tip so you know it's near the surface and you don't smack someone with a 400 g jig when it launches from the water .
I'll stop now so others can give some input but thats how I do my leaders for jigging .

Knots
Well I was going to start another thread about knots but we use the GT knot for all our leader to braid joins , never done an allbright in all my years fishing .

PS if anyone has a question on leaders or other input then post away .

the trick is to use a knot
the trick is to use a knot where the leader's tag points towards the reel rather than towards the tip. So when U cast the tag doesnt catch on the guides.

Schneider Leader
Anyone tried the Schneider Leader? I've used it a lot lately for my rigs and rate it up there as one of the best to use. I like it a lot more than the penn 10x and jinkai, depending on what the leader is being used for ofcourse. The 150 pound is pretty thick, but still ties pretty well for jigs. I use the 80 pound for bottom bogging and is excellent.

Bottom bogging ????
Do we really want to know what that is ???
I use the Schnieder in the light stuff , up to 30 lb , it's good for what I use it for , muzza cod and Yella bellies don't see it in gin clear water got to be happy with that .
As for the heavier stuff , well I havn't tried the heavy stuff but if it's as good as their light stuff I will use it if I find it , is it compareable to Penn and Surecatch in price.
We had some Cajun red line on board but don't use it for leaders as it has terrible memory and the sure catch and penn 10X doesn't have much or any memory.
I think I'll have to see if I can get some Schnieder in the heavier lines to try as a few people have commented on it , would you use it as a wind on leader like we do .

Wind On's
Yep, I've been using it for pretty much every sort of fishing I do. Haven't used it for wind on's yet thou, have always used jinkai, but I'm keen to try it.
As for bottom bogging, its a term that a mate of Gribbo uses and its sorta stuck. It doesn't exactly conjure up a good image if you think about it in a non fishing sense, but I figure most of you don't have a mind that dirty anyway. Everyone except Shizz that is. :)))

wind on leaders
I've been using wind on with braid for the last couple of years on everything from trolling, jigging and throwing barra lures. I've got some modified ones for jigging with the razor gang that has 12in of multistrand wire double crimped on the end of the mono and cleaned up with heat shrink tubing...works really well

Wind-ons
Howzit goin jay? a wind-on leader is simply just any form of leader joined to ur mainline (generally by a knot) that can be wound through your guides and onto your spool. They are generally used when you need a long leader for abrasion resistence, e.g jiggin around wrecks, poppin for GT's etc. they are also used for shock leaders when, say, u are trolling with braid to give a little bit of stretch (shock absorber) between u and the fish as it can be pretty severe on both your gear and the fish! and one last use for wind-ons, is when chasing big game fish you need around 20ft of wind-on to be able to leader the fish (by hand) when close to the boat. These type of wind-ons are a little more complex, using dacron to form a joining loop, which would join to a bimini or platted double in your mainline. Your leader line feeds up inside the hollow dacron approx 30cm long, then is whipped at the join between dacron and leader material to make it solid. The dacron actually bites down on the mono that is inside as the fibres titen up.
Hope that last section isnt too confusing, but that is essentially the wind-on leader.
Cheers. GRIBBO

Leaders for jigging
Hi all, The only leader i use for jigging is the penn 10X in 100 pound. About 2mtrs long and i crimp as it sits nicer overall. The only reason i use a leader for jigging is to provide a shock absorber with braid. I only use 30 or 50 pound braid. Used this all last season and never droped a fish. Tried the leader twist that guys use for eggbeaters and found that cause you uses twice the length leader once it rubs a few times you need to replace it. It become costley after a few trips. I have found with sambos up to 45kgs a single leader is fine and no need to use a wind on a as the fish will normally sit on the surface and easy enough to tail lift into the boat. The only time i use a windon leader is if chasing Marlin or Tuna.
