Evaporative cooling unit replacement
Submitted by Ashen on Sun, 2016-10-23 10:35
Hi guys. We currently have a Celair evaporative cooling system. Just got it serviced today and was told that it will need some new parts "soon". Parts and installation was quoted nearly $2000! WTF!
We're now considering replacing the whole "motor unit" with something new. There are 6 vents in the house.
Any brands and models to recommend and avoid? Any evap cooling tradies willing to quote a new unit?
Cheers guys

Have had a good run with Breezeair. 11 outlets and 16 years old, other than normal maintenance have only had to replace a slow blow fuse. However motor has had a noisy bearing for the last two years so won't be far off a new one, probably this year.

I replaced the motor myself
I replaced the motor myself last year with the same system as you. Piece of urine and got a great price from Thermalec who price matched the best price I could find online. New motor and pads cost me just under $500 if I recall correctly.

Yes, it sounds cheap and I might able to order parts and install them myself but I'm not an electrician so if something goes wrong....

You switch off your mains
You switch off your mains power and remove the three terminals from the control box and and connect the pre crimped terminals from the new motor back the same as the old motor once it's installed. They even label which colour wire goes where in case you didn't take note.
Not exactly rocket science

Like how to charge $150 for
Like how to charge $150 for removing 3 wires from terminals in a control box and putting them back in the same order?
Seriously though where could you go wrong with changing over an air con motor? Not doing tests to check the cause of the damage?

I worked for breezair for a few years and would advise you against buying one, overpriced and lack airflow. coolbreeze currently manufacture a very reliable unit and back it with a ten year warranty. Coolbreeze use to be ordinary but now have ironed out all the bugs and are very good, parts are also reasonably priced.

Thanks "fish or die"
Fellow member "fish or die" has been extremely helpful with advice etc. Will be using him to swap over a new evap unit when our current one carks it.
Jack, thanks for the heads up about buying a unit and DIY. I'm all for saving a bit of cash here and there but would prefer a professional to do it.
