Deep water sounders
I have a Furuno FCV 585 sounder with a 1kw in hull transducer. It's a great sounder and better than the JRC FF30 I had previously. It reads fine at 35 knots and really has pretty good definition. I have used it to around 200m and the deeper I go the slower I have to travel to keep the image.............I tend to lose some definition as the water deepens. Dont get me wrong I have been fishing outa boats for 20 years and this is the best I have seen (non commercial).
I intend to go out wide in water 300 - 600m deep.................I dont know if the FCV 585 will do the job, has anyone tried it?
I have been looking at the new Lowrance broadband sounders.........they use the exact same trannie as I have (Airmar IHD-525). I tried one in Darwin recently and it was ok.............about the same definition as my Furuno, but I only used it in 80m water.
I'm thinking that I may need a commercial unit with 3kw.............. any feed back?

Your Furuno will do it
even with a 1kw tranny on 50kHz you are covering a large amount of ground. 15deg cone @350mts you are covering a diameter or 92.15mt or 6669m2.

Deepwater!
I use a Furuno FCV1100 with 2kw 200khz and a 2kw 28kz
Reads very well in the deepwater to 600m plus, gotta go slow in that depth still but picks up good definition and fish detection!
Your setup is a good one, the minimum I recommend for deepwater fishing also. The thing you need to look at is.......... "are you getting what you want out of your unit".....if not upgrade and the money spent will be worth it/warranted!

I'm currently in the process of getting a 585 myself. All the info i have received about 1kw transducers is pointing to the fact that in hull ones provide weakest signal out the three types of transducers. Through hull, in hull and transom mount.
They say the trouble with the in hull transducer is that the power has to shoot through the skin of the hull and then back through when the signal returns and each time losing power and creating a weaker signal in the process.
I am looking at a through hull transducer but it makes me nervous about drilling a 130mm hole in the bottom of the boat !
I'm still interested in yours though.

in deep water you need to
in deep water you need to slow down as you moving forward at a good few meters per second and you signal is travelining at around 1300m per sec ( speed of sound in water is 4 times faster than in air!), but it still has to get their and back again before your transducer leaves the cone signal return envelope.
So slower is better!
Having said that, a FCV585 will read fine up to about 250m with a high end transducer with ease. too many people change their sounders before looking at a better transducer first. I't a bit like a HiFi system, better the speakers, better the sound,
Having said that, I run a FCV 295 with a 1Kw commercial transducer, it has the same power out put at 1kW as the FCV 585 on the transducer I'm using ( because the 3kW ones are bloody costly and dam big!). So no reason to go to the FCV 295 or other 3kW units, unless you go the whole hog and get a top end 3kW transducer to go with it.
Muppet, look at the pics of my transom mount I did for my boat, using a commercial unit normaly used in a wet box.
i will get some updated pics of it, as I have stream lined the ramp to the hull in front of the tranny to reduce water turbulance on the ridge. but you can get the idea from those pics.

i'd like to know how you can be sure your on the spot, in deep water.
as garry pointed out, when fish appear on screen , you could be around 50 meters from them. whats the trick with boat positioning ??
do you just sound with the drift , and as they appear , drop??
